Pitch based carbon fibers for automotive body and electrodes

Abstract: Pitch is an attractive raw material for carbon fiber precursors due to its low cost stemming from its availability as a residue of coking and petroleum processes. Ford Motor Company reported a carbon fiber target price of $11.0/kg by using a fast cycle-time manufacturing method with carbon fiber in an inexpensive format, allowing for an average retail price of gasoline of $3.58/gallon. They also recommended the use of carbon fiber with strength of 1700 MPa, modulus of 170 GPa, and 1.5% elongation. This study i… Show more

“…PE production via fusion spinning is cheaper, faster, more energy-saving and more environmentally friendly. PE has a higher carbon content and carbonation rate in addition to its congruence nature [ 11 , 13 , 14 ]. Its inherent defects make MPCF brittle, and that makes the spinning of these fibres difficult [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…Pitch is an attractive material which can be widely used for fabricating anticorrosion membranes due to its stable chemical structure [12,13]. Among various kinds of pitches, isotropic pitch with suitable softening point can be used to prepare electrospun fibers [14,15]. Moreover, effectively choosing suitable structure and carefully controlling different material effects will maximize the acidproof and breathable performance [16,17].…”

“…Because of these advantages, carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) are widely used in the aerospace [2,3], automobile [4,5], and sports industries [6]. Thermoset matrix composites have been of significant importance to the engineering community for many years.…”
