Pioneer colonizer microorganisms in biofilm formation on galvanized steel in a simulated recirculating cooling‐water system

Abstract: Some bacteria have a higher tendency to produce biofilm than others. Especially, Pseudomonas and Aeromonas strains are acknowledged to be pioneer colonizers and are predominant in biofilm formation. We examined biofilm formation and first attachment maintance of biofilms of Pseudomonas spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aeromonas spp, sulphate reducing bacteria and filamentous fungi. A simulated recirculating cooling-water system was used. Heterotrophic bacteria counts on galvanized steel and glass surfaces rose du… Show more

“…Aeromonads are able to colonize both biotic surfaces in plants and animals (Mizan et al, 2015), and abiotic surfaces, notably sediment, steel, glass, and polyvinyl chloride (Zalmum et al, 1998; Béchet and Blondeau, 2003; Bomo et al, 2004; Doğruöz et al, 2009; Balasubramanian et al, 2012). The substratum properties, chemical components, and nutrient availability are critical conditions influencing bacterial attachment.…”

“…This bacterium has been associated with early stages of biofilm formation in metallic material surfaces (Doğruöz et al 2009b;Liu et al 2009Liu et al , 2011; their primary role appears to be the establishment of an oxygen-free environment to harbor other potentially corrosive bacteria with diverse oxidative profiles (Pedersen et al 1988). They also produce exopolysaccharides, which protect cells from metallic ions and help to trap other species of microorganisms (Gubner and beech 2000;Ceyhan and Ozdemir 2008).…”

“…types of surface materials, water temperature, pH, microbial quality of intake water, concentration and quality of nutrients, as well as the presence of residual biocide (Zacheus et al 2000;Markku et al 2006;Turetgen and Cotuk 2007;Doğruöz et al 2009b). Due to economical, operational and public health reasons, both bulk water and the biofilm layer of cooling towers should be monitored and controlled in view of microbial burden.…”
