Gamma-rays from the decay of neutral pions photoproduced from hydrogen by the bremsstrahlung beam of the Caltech synchrotron have been studied with a thallium chloride crystal total absorption spectrometer. The energy spectrum of the decay gamma-rays produced by a range of incident photon energy is obtained by the photon difference method and this spectrum enables a separation of the gamma-rays into two groups: (i) those from the decay of neutral pions produced singly from hydrogen and (ii) those from the decay of neutral pions from multipleproduction reactions. The cross sections for the single-production reaction are in agreement with the recoil proton experiments at Caltech and Cornell. For the multiple-production reactions we measure the cross section for producing neutral pions within a range of kinetic energies: Incident photon energy 990 Mev 990 Mev 810 Mev Centerof-mass angle 91° 118° 114° 7T° kinetic energy range (cm.) 175 Mev to 360 Mev 80 Mev to 360 Mev 75 Mev to 290 Mev da/dQ (cm.), in cm 2 sterad -1 (5.9±1.6)X10-» (8.1± 1.9) X10-30 (3.7±1.0)X10~3 0It is shown that all available multiple-production data can be explained in terms of two compound states, one at about 750 Mev and the other at some higher energy. This is in agreement with an analysis of the single-photoproduction data, which is given in an appendix. These two states are, respectively, (r= §, /= §+) and (r-|,/-i+). R

The late Fifties were going to be eventful for physics in Italy. CERN had officially started its activities in the fall of 1954; however, the single European countries, Italy in the first place, were not in the condition to compete at the highest international level. A peculiar form of international distribution of the forms of research activities was then going to characterize those years, in particular as far as relationships between Italy and the United States were concerned. Italian physicists who had become known in the United States and were in close relationship with their colleagues active on the opposite shore of the Atlantic obtained that the analysis of data collected in American labs.-in particular bubble chamber data-could be partially carried out in Italy. I try here to give a feeling of the kind of theoretical activity that involved Franco Selleri, among others, in that context.

Multiple pion production by pions in hydrogen has been studied in the interaction iT+p -> p+7r~+7r + +7r~" at 810, 970, and 1100 Mev. Total cross sections were measured as 0.26±0.14 mb at 810 Mev, 0.32d=0.21 mb at 970 Mev, and 0.54±0.32 mb at 1100 Mev. The kinematics of this pion production reaction at these energies appear to be reasonably well described by phase space dependence, but provide some support for an "isobar cascade" scheme in which the T = J "second resonance" is excited and decays to the T=J r = § isobar, which decays in turn to a final state consisting of a nucleon, a recoil pion, and two decay pions.
