Pion Production in Pion-Nucleon Collisions

Abstract: The single production of pions occurring in pion-nucleon collisions at incident pion energies below ^1.5 Bev has been considered in terms of the inelastic excitation of the nucleon to the isobaric state with isotopic spin and angular momentum == §, previously identified with the resonant state in the low-energy pion-nucleon scattering. An associated separate recoil pion accompanies the isobar, and conserves energy and momentum. The isobar subsequently decays into a nucleon and a pion. Expressions have been obt… Show more

“…It would later contribute a row to the barion decuplet. Lindenbaum and Sternheimer (15,16) had brought about that the resonance could play a role as an intermediate step of the processes of single pion production in pion-nucleon collisions. If so, the pion center of mass momentum spectra would exhibit a peak and a bump, respectively at higher and lower momenta, the peak arising from events in which the pion was "directly" produced in pair with the resonance, (extra-pions), the bump due to decay pions.…”

“…Marcello Ceccarelli, in due time, invented in Bologna the digitiser which would become known as 'Mangiaspago' (the string-eater). 16 Giacomelli stressed, in turn, the central coordinating role for precise measurements and for central computing played by the CNAF 17 -INFN center in Bologna. 16 Within a few years he would turn to radioastronomy and direct the construction of the first Italian radiotelescope "Croce del Nord" (Northern Cross), Medicina, near Bologna.…”

“…8 The precise nature of the physical process responsible for the appearance of these resonant states is a matter of considerable discussion. 12, 13 Presumably these effects are a consequence of either resonant pion-proton interactions, resonant pion-pion interactions, or some combination of these. Lindenbaum and Sternheimer 14 have suggested an extended isobar model of pion production by pions in which either the T~J-% isobaric state (/*) § or one of the higher T= \ levels (/*)* is excited by the incident pion, the final state consisting of a recoil pion and a pion-nucleon pair originating in the decay of the isobar: w+N-ir+N-(/*) § +7r 2 ; (7*) r >N+7T h (1) (2)…”
