Pion–nucleon scattering inside the Mandelstam triangle

Abstract: We study the third order pion-nucleon scattering amplitude obtained from heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory inside the Mandelstam triangle. We reconstruct the pion-nucleon amplitude in the unphysical region by use of dispersion relations and determine the pertinent low-energy constants by a fit to this amplitude. A detailed comparison with values obtained from phase shift analysis is given. Our analysis leads to a pion-nucleon σ-term of σ(0) = 40 MeV based on the Karlsruhe partial wave analysis. We have r… Show more

“…The main advantages of such an approach are the following: first, the πN amplitude in the subthreshold region is a polynomial in the Mandelstam variables (apart from the Born terms), so that the chiral series is expected to converge best there. In contrast to [9], we do not need additional input from the physical region, as in our case the subthreshold parameters follow from the RS solution alone. Second, the matching amounts to equating the subthreshold parameters from [40,46] with their chiral expansion, which reduces the determination of the LECs to an algebraic problem.…”

“…Elastic pion-nucleon (πN) scattering certainly belongs to the the most extensively studied processes in ChPT [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. The πN scattering amplitude enters as a subprocess into the interactions between two and three nucleons at large distances.…”

“…However, in the literature exist various sets of possible values for these c i constants, see e.g. [1,24,25,26,27], which have sizable deviations from each other. These different choices for the LECs will affect the predictions of nuclear structure observables obtained with the chiral 3N interactions.…”
