“…However, two pineapple-feeding species with very similar ventral wing patterns (called S. ziba and S. megarus in Robbins & Nicolay 2002, differentiating characters are given below) are sympatric throughout the Neotropical lowlands. The name S. megarus has been used recently for the pineapple-feeding pests (e.g., Pastrana 2004;Inclán et al 2007Inclán et al , 2008Faria et al 2009;Matos & Reinhardt 2009), but these authors did not distinguish S. megarus from S. ziba. Although the taxonomy of this group is not fully resolved because some of the phenotypes are rare and variable, no more than two species occur at any locality.…”

“…In turn, some bromeliads are insectivores (Ward & Fish 1979;González et al 1991). Additionally, there is an extensive agricultural literature on the insect "pests" of commercial pineapple (e.g., Collins 1960;Sanches 1981;Marie 1995;Petty et al 2002;Reinhardt 2009). …”

“…Triploid pineapples, such as 'Gigante de Tarauacá' (Matos andReinhardt, 2009) and'Cabezona' (Coppens d'Eeckenbrugge et al, 1997), have been cultivated in commercial plantations, but in much smaller proportion when compared to traditional diploid cultivars described by Coppens d' Eeckenbrugge et al (1997). We suggest that the triploid nature of 'Gigante de Tarauacá' is a consequence of the union of a normal haploid gamete (n) with a non-reduced gamete (2n), as reported by Collins (1933) and Heilborn (1922) in other pineapple triploid genotypes.…”

“…According to Matos and Reinhardt, the increase in fruit pulp consumption results in higher fruit processing wastes that can be processed into higher value-added products. 24 The use of pineapple peel to produce b-glucosidase has been shown to be promising in Brazil, since the country is a major pineapple producer. 16,24 In the presence of wheat bran, passion bagasse, and soybean peel, low levels of enzyme activity were verified, when compared to the cultures with pineapple peel.…”
