Pilot Study for Investigating the Cyclic Behavior of Slit Damper Systems with Recentering Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) Bending Bars Used for Seismic Restrainers

Abstract: Although the steel slit dampers commonly utilized for aseismic design approach can dissipate considerable energy created by the yielding of base materials, large residual deformation may happen in the entire frame structure. After strong external excitation, repair costs will be incurred in restoring a structure to its original condition and to replace broken components. For this reason, alternative recentering devices characterized by smart structures, which mitigate the damage for such steel energy dissipati… Show more

“…In order to improve the vibration suppression capacity during the impact, an energy-dissipating material is bonded to the delimiters. Commonly used energy dissipating materials include viscoelastic materials [80,81] and shape memory alloys [82]. Figure 2c shows the schematic of the PTMD.…”

“…Superelastic SMAs, characterized by inherent hysteretic damping and spontaneous recentering, have currently emerged as one class of smart materials for achieving SRSS. Various types of SMA-based components, such as connections, dampers, and braces have been proposed [10][11][12].…”

“…The results indicated that VE-PTMDs performed well in suppressing the vibration of a suspended piping system. With their hysteretic behavior [46], shape memory alloys (SMAs) are another popular energy dissipating material used in control systems [47][48][49][50][51]. As will be further discussed in the following sections, SMAs have unique material properties originating from their transition from martensite to austenite states.…”
