Pilomatrix carcinoma with lymph node metastases

Abstract: Pilomatrix carcinoma is a rare skin tumor with an origin from hair matrix cells. The tumor is locally aggressive with a great tendency for recurrence, but the metastatic potential is limited. A pilomatrix carcinoma in 76-year-old female with lymph node metastases is presented. In addition to classical histopathological criteria and DNA ploidy analysis, a broad panel of antibodies was used for evaluation of the metastatic potential. Both primary tumor and lymph node metastasis revealed extremely high proliferat… Show more

“…Pilomatrix carcinomas have been observed in patients older than 40 years of age, with tendency of local invasion and distant metastases. 18 Histopathologic malignant transformation shows hairmatriculated differentiation as well as an infiltrate pattern with perineural and perivascular invasion, with cell necrosis and mitotic figures. 18 Both pilomatrixoma and pilomatrix carcinoma are related to mutations of the beta-catenin gene (OMIM ID *116806), a signaling protein involved in the development of the pilous follicles.…”

“…Metastatic deposits from undiagnosed visceral and breast adenocarcinoma are virtually indistinguishable microscopically from sweat gland carcinoma and must be considered before a diagnosis of metastatic sweat gland carcinoma is made. 7 The recommended treatment of all subtypes of sweat gland carcinomas is wide surgical excision along with regional lymphnode dissection in the presence of clinically positive nodes. Some authors advocate prophylactic regional lymph node dissection, especially in patients with recurrent lesions after wide excision or with highly undifferentiated tumours.…”

“…Inni autorzy definiują stany przedrakowe jako choroby nienowotworowe lub zaliczają tu niektóre nowotwory niezłośliwe, z których często rozwija się nowotwór zło-śliwy. Ich wspólnym mianownikiem są procesy odrostu i rozrostu łatwiej podlegające działaniu czynników kancerogennych (3,7). Istnieje także podział na stany przedrakowe względne (relativae) i stany przedrakowe bezwzględne (absolutae).…”
