Pigment production and growth of Alternanthera plants cultured in vitro in the presence of tyrosine

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of tyrosine on the in vitro growth and the production of the betacyanin pigment in Alternanthera philoxeroides and A. tenella. Nodal segments were inoculated in MS medium containing different concentrations of tyrosine (0, 25, 50 and 75 µM)

“…Time periods of 36 and 48h were suffi cient to stimulate the accumulation of these compounds (14.6 and 13.9mg of amaranthine 100gMF -1 , respectively) when compared to the control (3.7mg of amaranthine 100gMF -1 ) ( Figure 1A). However, the observed concentrations of betacyanins were much lower than those found by KLEINOWSKI et al (2014) in the stems of the same species: 36.95mg of amaranthine 100g MF -1 with tyrosine elicitation (75µM). This response might be due to the type of plant material and elicitor used in the analyses.…”

“…Alternanthera tenella Colla (joyweed) is a weed that occurs in crops and uncultivated areas in northwest Brazil but also in other regions, like the state of São Paulo [ 85 , 96 , 97 ]. A. tenella has been used in popular medicine to treat the infections, fevers, bruises and itches [ 98 , 99 ]. The plant has been also used as diuretic [ 100 , 101 ].…”

“…Both increased with the addition of salicylic acid to the culture medium. In order to enhance the production of betalains, some authors assayed the action of tyrosine added to the in vitro cultures of A. tenella [ 98 ]. The authors reported a negative effect on in vitro growth of this species, affecting the formation of shoot and roots, nevertheless increased the biosynthesis of betacyanins, measured as total amaranthin.…”

“…De forma similar, Kleinowski et al (17) y Fang et al (18) encontraron una importante proporción de glicósidos en extractos de Alternanthera philoxeroides, destacando su papel en los efectos antitumorales y antivirales observados in vitro. Es así que incluso, Hundiwale et al consideran que la presencia de glicósidos es una característica del género Alternanthera (4) .…”
