The research focused on how the audience of gender-diverse series in Indonesia reacted to the LGBTQ+ themes broadcasted in some Netflix series aired from 2020 to 2022. It was interesting to discuss, considering that LGBTQ+ issues were still taboo, and that Indonesian society was known to be conventional and religious. By examining the audience’s reactions to the narration of LGBTQ+ themes, the research delved deeper into how Indonesian audience members problematize the LGBTQ+ issues in the Netflix series. The research was conducted with the qualitative research method by asking 70 participants, from whom validated informed consent was retrieved in advance, to answer the questions posed in the online questionnaire employed herein and by inviting them to join Zoom-mediated interviews. Three problematizations are found: Netflix’s ideology related to its LGBTQ+ content, audience perception about the LGBTQ+ community, and audience religiosity before and after watching such a series. There are also varying views on these problematizations according to the various manners in which audience members are reasoning, which are subsequently assigned to several clusters. Ultimately, such problematizations help shed light on how Netflix and its LGBTQ+ content is dynamically perceived by the audience.

PurposeThis study is concerned with the dynamics of the internal communications at Netflix following the release of The Closer and the public debate that followed, testing Netflix's long-standing reputation for promoting diverse content and supporting a progressive organizational culture.Design/methodology/approachUsing the circuit of culture (CoC) as a theoretical framework, this study applies a case study approach to analyze internal communication and strategic public relations in addressing this crisis.FindingsThis study's findings illustrate that by failing to interpret two of the five moments of the CoC, production and identity, Netflix negated the very values that constitute its brand. These findings have implications for how public relations' long-standing focus on two-way symmetrical communication is problematic, especially in the workplace.Originality/valueThe findings situate how the exertion of power within an organization, particularly in moments of identity and production, problematize the role of two-way symmetrical communication within an organization in crisis.

This work aims to explore the optimization effects of marketing in the field of rural tourism with the support of artificial intelligence technologies such as deep learning. It first conducts a framework analysis of the requirements of the rural tourism marketing system, focusing on the recommendation system module. Subsequently, the RippleNet network is introduced, incorporating a scenic knowledge graph into the recommendation model. Simultaneously, the Spatiotemporal Graph Convolutional Attention Network (STGCAN) algorithm is introduced to build a rural tourism recommendation system based on RippleNet integrating STGCAN. Experimental results demonstrate that the system has achieved significant success in terms of loss value, prediction accuracy, recall, and F1 value, with an accuracy of 92.64%, recall of 89.65%, and F1 value of 92.12%, surpassing baseline algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Additionally, the runtime of the proposed algorithm is significantly lower than that of other models, with a runtime of only 18.84 seconds for a data volume of 3000 records. Therefore, the proposed rural tourism recommendation system exhibits superior predictive performance, providing robust support for the optimization of marketing strategies in the tourism industry.
