Piata palisadegrass deferred in the fall: effects of initial height and nitrogen in the sward structure

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to evaluate the mass of the forage and of the morphological components, and the sward structure in Piata palisadegrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piata) deferred in function of different initial heights and nitrogen levels. Two levels of nitrogen (75 and 150 kg/ha) and one control without fertilization associated to three initial deferring heights (20, 30, and 40 cm) were evaluated. The design was of completely randomized blocks with three replications in a subdivided plot schem… Show more

“…In any case, the objective is to remove old, senescent, and lowquality forage, consequently improving regrowth. Shorter pasture grass allows more light penetration, stimulating the appearance of new vegetative tillers and, consequently, increasing the nutritional value (SOUZA et al, 2012).…”

“…More lenient cuts remove smaller quantity of forage, which results in larger remaining leaf area at the beginning of regrowth (Sousa et al, 2012). Thus, the greater forage mass at the end of the deferment period is partly due to the greater mass at the beginning of deferment.…”

“…Conditions of more forage removal (low initial height) enable greater penetration of light inside the sward (Sousa et al, 2012), making regrowth possibly occur from new vegetative tillers (Table 3), which could explain its smaller masses of live stem, dead stem and dead leaf. According to Langer (1963), higher light intensities favored tillering.…”

“…A adubação nitrogenada pode ser utilizada em pastagens diferidas como forma de aumentar o perfilhamento do pasto e a produção de forragem (2) . Outra importante vantagem do uso do nitrogênio em pastagens diferidas é a possibilidade de redução do período de diferimento dos pastos, sem diminuir a massa de forragem diferida.…”
