Phytotoxic Aromatic Constituents of Oxalis pes‐caprae

Abstract: A cinnamic acid ester, two dihydrocinnamic acid esters, a noroxyneolignan, a dibenzyl ether derivative, along with common aromatic compounds and flavonoids were isolated from the extracts of fresh leaves and twigs of Oxalis pes-caprae. The structures of these aromatic compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses, especially 2D-NMR techniques. Their effects on the germination and growth of Lactuca sativa L. as standard target species have been studied at concentrations ranging from 10(-4) to… Show more

“…The isolated compounds were tested as to their activity towards the germination and growth of Lactuca sativa (lettuce). The phytotoxicity observed for some of these compounds on germination and growth of lettuce seeds seems to contribute to the invasiveness of the plant and their use as agrochemicals if suitably prepared and/or modified is suggested [37][38][39]. Further reports include the studies of an extract of the leaves of an undisclosed specimen towards vascular, antioxidant and neuroprotective activities, suggesting the potential use of this extract as a source of bioactive compounds [35].…”

“…Pendimethalin, a common pre-emergence herbicidal agent, was chosen as a reference compound to evaluate the results of germination experiments (Della Greca et al, 2009). Most of the compounds isolated from S. miniata inhibited the germination of P. rhoeas and A. sativa in Petri dish experiments (Table 4).…”

“…Oxalis pes-caprae L. is an invasive weed abundant in Mediterranean zones (DellaGreca et al 2007;Ferrero et al 2015) from which several compounds have been previously identified by DellaGreca et al (2007DellaGreca et al ( , 2009DellaGreca et al ( , 2010DellaGreca et al ( , 2008, such as cinnamate derivatives, aromatic compounds and phenols. In our previous study we also identified luteolin and apigenin derivatives in the leaves of this plant (Gaspar et al 2018).…”
