Invasive Plants: Turning Enemies into Value

Abstract: In this review, a brief description of the invasive phenomena associated with plants and its consequences to the ecosystem is presented. Five worldwide invasive plants that are a threat to Portugal were selected as an example, and a brief description of each is presented. A full description of their secondary metabolites and biological activity is given, and a resume of the biological activity of extracts is also included. The chemical and pharmaceutical potential of invasive species sensu lato is thus acknowl… Show more

“…This fact, associated with the high number of endemic species, led the WWF (Word Wide Fund for Nature) to consider the Mediterranean Basin one of the great biodiversity hotspots worldwide [3]. However, several threats are destroying this genetic heritage, such as the fires that occurred in recent decades in mainland Portugal [4][5][6][7]. In addition to occurring more frequently, there has also been an increase in the burnt area, accumulating to hundreds of thousands of hectares.…”

“…allow them to take advantage of native species with the consequence of their disappearance and radical landscape modifications [ 2 ]. However, the chemistry of invasive species must vary, and with enormous biological activity potential that remains to be explored [ 3 ]. Invasive plants may serve as inexpensive and renewable sources of bioactive compounds.…”
