Phytoremediation of soils polluted with heavy metals in the vicinity of the Zenica steel mill in Bosnia and Herzegovina: potential for using native flora

Abstract: This study investigates levels of soil pollution and estimates the phytoremediation potential of 7 native plants growing close to the Zenica steel mill. Plant leaves or roots and associated soil samples were collected from this site and characterized in terms of the concentrations of the heavy metals Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu and Ni. Heavy metal concentrations in soil and plant samples were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Bioaccumulation factors for heavy metals were also calculated. All plants … Show more

“…All of the concentrations of heavy metals except cadmium recorded at the sites studied differed significantly from those recorded in the control. This is in line with the results of similar studies (Ogundiran and Osibanjo 2008;Cortez and Ching 2014;Murtić et al 2021).…”

“…Fixed PTEs means to stabilize or reduce their mobility in the soil, with the aim of reducing the bioavailability of plants, animals and humans and reducing the leaching of PTEs to groundwater 10 . Over the past few decades, a variety of remediation methods for PTEs contaminated soils have been investigated, including soil washing 11 , electric remediation 12 , solidification/stabilization 13 , phytoremediation and biological/microbial treatment 14 , vitrification landfill and bioreactor to reduce heavy metal bioavailability 15 . Among these methods, cleaning the contaminated soil was difficult and time-consuming, so there was a need to develop techniques to fix heavy metals in the soil before returning it to agricultural use.…”
