The present study was carried out in Castanhão Reservoir, a large aquatic system in the Brazilian semi-arid region that serves multiples uses as water drinking supply and intensive fish-cage aquaculture site. In order to understand the effects of environmental conditions on the spatial and temporal variability of the phytoplankton functional groups (FG) and the main 'characterizing taxa', sub-superficial water samples were collected from March 2012 to August 2013, a period distinguished by the continuous drop in reservoir volume due to rainfall shortage. Eighteen functional groups and 102 total phytoplankton taxa were found in the Castanhão reservoir during the study. No significant differences were observed relative to spatial variation of total phytoplankton composition throughout the reservoir (PERMANOVA, P>0.05). On the other hand, according to cluster analysis results, three temporal phases have been identified (Similarity Profile, P<0.05), based on 102 phytoplankton taxa. The 'characterizing taxa' was found using the Similarity Percentage procedure (cut-off 90%), being thus defined as those taxa that contributed the most to the similarity within each temporal phase. Nineteen 'characterizing taxa' described the Castanhão reservoir, with predominance of those typical of mixing and turbidity conditions. Cyanobacteria dominated through the three temporal phases. According to the redundancy analysis, nutrient availability and water transparency were found to influence the phytoplankton temporal dynamics. The phase I (rainy season) was most represented by Planktolyngbya minor/Pl. limnetica (FG=S1), which reached best performance under strongly decreased phosphate-P concentrations and low water transparency. In phase II (dry season), Pseudanabaena sp.1 (FG=?) outcompeted other cyanobacteria probably due the increase in water transparency and decrease in ammonium-N. Finally, in phase III (rainy season) the decrease of water transparency triggered a recovery of shade-adapted cyanobacteria, but at this time mostly represented by Pseudanabaena limnetica (FG=S1). Phase III was also distinctive from the other ones by the highest Nitrate-N and phosphate-P concentrations related to thermocline disruption, which favored an increase in total phytoplankton biomass recorded by the augment of green algae density (FGs=X1, J and F). We concluded that the temporal dynamics of phytoplankton composition was associated to environmental changes in Castanhão Reservoir from 2012 to 2013, which were driven by seasonal climate variation from region (rainy/dry seasons), as well as, by the reduction in reservoir volume that resulted in the disruption of the thermocline, water mixing and an increase in inorganic P and N.

ABSTRACT. Abiotic variables and phytoplankton effects on zooplanktonic community from a reservoir in northeast Brazil. Zooplankton from Mundaú reservoir, State of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil was studied concerning temporal (hours and seasonal period) and spatial (pelagic and coastal regions in different depths) variabilities, correlating them to the environmental variables and the phytoplankton. Twenty-three infrageneric and five subgeneric zooplankton taxa were observed. On the whole, Rotifera was the dominant group during this study, especially influenced by the oxygen concentrations. Phytoplankton was dominated by Cyanobacteria. On the dry period, physical variables certainly controlled the zooplankton's development, allowing elevated algal densities. On the rainy period, zooplankton correlation with the system's nutrients levels on pelagic region probably conduced to a resources competition between phytoplankton and zooplankton, controlling algal densities.KEYWORDS. RESUMO.O zooplâncton do reservatório de Mundaú, Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil foi estudado quanto a variabilidade temporal (entre os horários e períodos seco chuvoso) e espacial (nas regiões pelágica e litorânea em diferentes profundidades) correlacionando-as com as variáveis ambientais e com o fitoplâncton. Vinte e três táxons infragenéricos e cinco subgenéricos de zooplâncton foram encontrados. De forma geral, Rotifera foi o grupo dominante em todo o estudo. O fitoplâncton foi dominado pelas cianobactérias. No período seco, as variáveis físicas certamente controlaram o desenvolvimento do zooplâncton, favorecendo o estabelecimento de elevadas densidades algais. No período chuvoso, a correlação do zooplâncton com os níveis de nutrientes do sistema na região pelágica provavelmente conduziu a uma competição de recursos entre o fitoplâncton e o zooplâncton, controlando as densidades algais. Aim: This study analyzed -the diel and vertical dynamics of phytoplankton functional groups in a natural tropical lake (Extremoz Lake, northeast Brazil), to investigate and understand the driver factors of the community during a severe drought period. Methods: Sampling of the abiotic variables and phytoplankton was performed at intervals of 6 hours over 24 hours in vertical profiles, in dry and rainy seasons (according to the historical average). The phytoplankton species were grouped according to the functional groups' approach sensu Reynolds et al. (2002). Results: October/12 was considered as a dry period (18.4 mm), while March/13, due to the historical average, as a rainy season, due to the low rainfall during the study period (15.7 mm), it was called severe drought. The lake showed thermal and chemical destratification in both periods. Phytoplankton biomass was higher in the dry season and their vertical distribution was stratified in both periods. In both samplings there were less algal biomass during the night. Phytoplankton functional groups of mixed and shallow systems (S 1 , L 0 and K) were descriptors throughout the study period with higher biomass always registered in the group S 1 , represented by Planktolyngbya limnetica (Cyanobacteria) Conclusion: The lack of seasonality observed in this study, due to prolonged drought, may have influenced the pattern of homogeneous behavior in both samplings. This pattern strongly influenced the vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the two periods, with a constancy of dominance of functional descriptors groups.Keywords: shallow lake, vertical distribution, cyanobacteria, functional groups.Resumo: Objetivo: O nosso trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a dinâmica nictemeral e vertical dos grupos funcionais fitoplanctônicos em uma lagoa natural tropical (Lagoa de Extremoz, nordeste do Brasil), para investigar e compreender os fatores direcionadores da comunidade em um período de seca severa. Métodos: As amostragens das variáveis abióticas e do fitoplâncton foram realizadas a intervalos de 6 horas ao longo de um ciclo de 24 horas em perfis verticais nas estações de seca e chuva. As espécies fitoplanctônicas foram agrupadas de acordo com a abordagem de grupos funcionais sensu Reynolds et al. (2002). Resultados: O mês de outubro/12 foi caracterizado como período seco (18,4 mm), enquanto que março/13, pela média histórica era caracterizado período chuvoso, devido a baixa precipitação no período de estudo (15,7 mm), foi denominado seca severa. A lagoa apresentou desestratificação térmica e química em ambos períodos. A biomassa do fitoplâncton foi maior na estação seca e a distribuição vertical da mesma foi estratificada em ambas os períodos. Em ambas as amostragens houve menor biomassa algal nos períodos noturnos.
