The seafood industry generates waste, including shells, bones, intestines, and wastewater. The discards are nutrient-rich, containing varying concentrations of carotenoids, proteins, chitin, and other minerals. Thus, it is imperative to subject seafood waste, including shrimp waste (SW), to secondary processing and valorization for demineralization and deproteination to retrieve industrially essential compounds. Although several chemical processes are available for SW processing, most of them are inherently ecotoxic. Bioconversion of SW is cost-effective, ecofriendly, and safe. Microbial fermentation and the action of exogenous enzymes are among the significant SW bioconversion processes that transform seafood waste into valuable products. SW is a potential raw material for agrochemicals, microbial culture media, adsorbents, therapeutics, nutraceuticals, and bio-nanomaterials. This review comprehensively elucidates the valorization approaches of SW, addressing the drawbacks of chemically mediated methods for SW treatments. It is a broad overview of the applications associated with nutrient-rich SW, besides highlighting the role of major shrimp-producing countries in exploring SW to achieve safe, ecofriendly, and efficient bio-products.

Abstract. Soeprapto H, Ariadi H, Badrudin U. 2023. The dynamics of Chlorella spp. abundance and its relationship with water quality parameters in intensive shrimp ponds. Biodiversitas 24: 2919-2926. Chlorella spp. is a plankton genus belonging to the phylum Chlorophyta and is commonly found in the shrimp farming ponds. This plankton might serve as natural feed especially for the post-larvae stage shrimps. This study aims to investigate the dynamics of Chlorella spp. abundance and its correlation with the N:P ratio in the intensively managed shrimp ponds. The study was conducted using a causal ex-post facto design with data collection through purposive sampling. The results showed that the plankton abundance in the observed ponds was moderate consisted of 4 class and 7 genera. The dominant genus was Chroococcus spp. and Chlorella spp. with abundance ranging from 2.50E+05 to 2.60E+05 cells/mL. Plankton abundance correlated with water quality conditions, including pH of 7.9, salinity of 19-20‰, temperature of 28.50-28.75°C, dissolved oxygen of 5.12-5.39 mg/L, nitrite of 0.035-0.072 mg/L, phosphate of 0.011-0.025 mg/L, organic matter of 95.77-102.32 mg/L, and alkalinity of 125-130 mg/L. There was also correlation between the increase in plankton biomass and nutrient solubility. The abundance of Chlorella spp. was negatively correlated with the N:P ratio of the water in the ponds. Based on dynamic model analysis, the most ideal N:P ratio is 1:20 from several simulations of 1:10, 1:20, 1:30, and 1:40. The dynamics of Chlorella spp. abundance followed an oscillatory pattern from the beginning of cultivation to harvest with the most ideal N:P ratio of 1:20. This understanding is important for making environmental engineering concepts in pond aquatic ecosystems.

Kualitas air berperan penting terhadap perubahan dinamika struktur plankton. Perubahan struktur dinamika plankton berpengaruh terhadap pertumbuhan udang vannamei. Penelitian bertujuan mengetahui hubungan kualitas air dengan dinamika struktur plankton. Sampel dikumpulkan pada tiga tambak budidaya udang vannamei intensif di Garut, Jawa Barat.Tambak yang diamati sebanyak tiga petak (2.860 m 2 /kolam). Perlakuan budidaya pada masing-masing tambak dilakukan secara sama tanpa ada variabel yang berbeda. Hasil penelitian diperoleh kualitas air tambak secara keseluruhan berada pada nilai optimal kecuali fosfat yang mengalami fluktuasi lebih dari nilai optimal. Kisaran nilai fosfat tertinggi pada tambak 2 sekitar 0,023 -0,718 (0,206 ± 0,213), tambak 1 sekitar 0,0266 -0,7444 (0,227 ± 0,244) dan terendah pada tambak 3 sekitar 0,022 -0,6 (0,183 ± 0,192). Komunitas plankton tambak ditemukan 5 kelompok (21 genus). Kelimpahan plankton berkisar 5-5783 ind/ml. Nilai indeks keragaman tambak 1 (H' = 2,0255) dan tambak 2 (H' = 2,1606) termasuk dalam kategori lebih stabil, sedangkan tambak 3 (H' = 1,4211) termasuk dalam kategori stabil. Nilai keseragaman tambak 1 (E = 0,7305) dan tambak 2 (E = 0,7337) termasuk dalam kategori tinggi, sedangkan tambak 3 (E = 0,5384) termasuk dalam kategori sedang karena ditemukan genus Oscillatoria sebayak 5783 ind/ml (62,72%). Jumlah genus Oscilatoria yang tinggi menyebabkan nilai dominansi tambak 3 (D = 0,4161) lebih tinggi dibandingkan tambak 1 (D = 0,1749) dan tambak 2 (D = 0,1477). Kualitas air tambak 1, 2 dan 3 memiliki hubungan sangat kuat dengan kelimpahan plankton dengan nilai R 2 berturut-turut, yakni: 0,8642, 0,9801 dan 0,8607.
