This experiment was conducted to compare the effects of four commercial herbal additives (Noviherb ® , Bioessence ® , Biostrong ® , and Novigrow ® ), and a commercial antibiotic (virginiamycin) on growth performance, carcass yield, visceral organs weight, thyroid hormones, and humoral immune responses of broiler chickens. Nine hundred day-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were reared in littercovered floor cages and distributed into five experimental groups with six replicates of 30 birds. Five dietary treatments tested were diets supplemented with Noviherb ® , Bioessence ® , Biostrong ® (each of them 100g/ton of diet), Novigrow ® (1000g/ton of diet), and virginiamycin (100g/ton of diet) as a positive control. Feed intake, body weight, mortality, feed conversion ratio, European broiler index, and feed cost per kilogram of body weight were measured during the experiment. Antibody titers against sheep red blood cells (SRBC), immunoglobulin G, immunoglobulin M, and plasma concentrations of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) were evaluated at the age of 42 days. Then, four birds per replicate were killed to determine the relative weight of carcass and organs. The GLM procedures of SAS software and Duncan's multiple range test were applied to analyze data in a completely randomized design with five treatments and six replicates of 30 birds per each. The effects of herbal additives on productive traits feed cost per kilogram of body weight and relative weight of organs were not significant in comparison with antibiotic treatment. Dietary inclusion of Noviherb ® , Biostrong ® , and Novigrow ® significantly decreased feed cost per kilogram of carcass compared with Bioessence ® or antibiotic treatments (p<0.05).The titers of IgG in Noviherb ® and virginiamycin were significantly higher (p<0.05) than in Biostrong ® and Novigrow ® fed groups. The plasma concentration of triiodothyronine was significantly decreased (p<0.05) by dietary inclusion of Noviherb ® and Novigrow ® compared to the antibiotic. In conclusion, all the evaluated herbal additives could act as a substitute for the growth-promoting antibiotic.

Extraction and Optimization of Active Metabolites From Cluster Bean: An In Vitro Biological and Phytochemical Investigation

The current study aimed to explore active metabolites of locally recognized and high yielding cultivar cluster bean (BR-99) with a wide range of adaptability having antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic potential. Six solvents were used (crude methanol, n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol, and aqueous) with escalating polarity for colorimetric determination of antioxidants such as total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), and free radical scavenging activity (FRSA) by DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay. Moreover, an antidiabetic and anticancer study was conducted by α-amylase inhibition and MTT (3-(4, 5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2, 5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide) assay. Biological investigations were carried out against the most commonly found infectious microbial strains. The significant results (P ≤ .001) of each activity were seen among six tested solvent extracts. The ethyl acetate and methanol extract have more antioxidant potential with the highest TPC (16.38 ± .13 mg GAE/g) and TFC (8.15 ± .24 mg CE/g), respectively. Similarly, methanol extract presented the highest free radical scavenging activity (46.31 ± .91%), followed by ethyl acetate, butanol, chloroform, aqueous, and n-hexane extract. However, the maximum α-amylase inhibition (62.54 ± 1.47%) and anticancer activity against human lung cancer cells were congregated (78.31 ± 1.46%) in butanol and chloroform, respectively. A positive correlation was seen between TPC with TFC ( R2= .8356), FRSA ( R2= .8381), and anti-diabetic activity ( R2= .8082), which highlights the phenolic contents as strong anti-oxidant agents especially flavonoids. Each extract of cluster bean (BR-99) showed significant antimicrobial activities for all tested bacterial strains except B. cereus and E. coli. The profound results of maximum antibacterial activity were witnessed by chloroform extract while ethyl acetate extracts showed great antifungal potential against all tested fungal strains. The HPLC quantitative analysis results of cluster bean (BR-99) revealed the presence of active phytochemicals such as gallic acid, HB acid, vanillic acid, kaempferol, sinapic acid, ferulic acid, salicylic acid, coumarins, quercetin, rutin, p-coumaric acid, and catechin, and the variation in both phytochemical and biological spectrums envisioned the cluster bean (BR-99) used in future as a cheap, safer, and potent source of bioactive drugs.

The antibiotic residues and pathogenic resistance against the drug are very common in poultry because of antibiotics used in their feed. It is necessary to use natural feed additives as effective alternatives instead of a synthetic antibiotic. This study aimed to investigate the immune response of Nigella sativa and Curcuma longa in broilers under biological stress against Pasteurella multocida . The total 100, one-day-old chicks were divided into 5 groups. Groups 1 and 2 served as control negative and control positive. Both control groups were receiving simple diet without any natural feed additives, but the infection was given in group 2 at day 28 with the dose of 5.14 × 10 7 CFU by IV. Groups 3A and 3B were offered 2% seed powder of Nigella sativ a, groups 4A and 4B were offered C. longa 1% in powdered form, and group 5A and 5B were offered both C. longa 1% and N. sativa 2% in the feed from day 1 and groups 3B, 4B, and 5B were challenged with P. multocida . The haemagglutination inhibition titter against Newcastle Disease virus (NDV), feed conversion ratio, mortality, gross, and histopathology were studied. The results of this study revealed that hemagglutination inhibition titers against NDV were highly significant ( P < 0.05) in treated groups, highest titers (3A, 6.8; 3B, 6.4; and 5A, 7.2) were obtained from treated Groups. The feed conversion ratio of N. sativa + C. longa treated groups (5A, 1.57, and 3A, 1.76) were higher than that of other nontreated groups. The gross and histopathological changes were much severe in control positive, but fewer changes were seen in treated groups. Therefore, we recommend that natural feed additives, black cumin (N. sativa) and turmeric ( C. longa ), act as an immune enhancer in broilers against P. multocida.
