The need to increase crop productivity and resistance directs interest in nanotechnology. Indeed, biogenic metal oxide nanoparticles can promote beneficial effects in plants, while their synthesis avoids the environmental impacts of conventional synthetic procedures. In this context, this research aimed to synthesize biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) using, for the first time, an extract of a wild and spontaneous aquatic species, Lemna minor (duckweed). The effectiveness of this biogenic synthesis was evidenced for comparison with non-biogenic ZnO-NPs (obtained without using the plant extract), which have been synthesized in this research. XRD (X-ray diffraction), FE-SEM (field emission gun electron scanning microscopy), EDX (energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscope) and UV-vis (ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry) showed the biogenic approach effectiveness. The duckweed extract was subjected to UHPLC-ESI/QTOF-MS (ultra high-pressure liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry) phenolic profiling. This untargeted characterization highlighted a high and chemically diverse content in the duckweed extract of compounds potentially implicated in nanoparticulation. From an application standpoint, the effect of biogenic nanoparticles was investigated on some traits of maize subjected to seed priming with a wide range of biogenic ZnO-NPs concentrations. Inductive effects on the shoot and root biomass development were ascertained concerning the applied dosage. Furthermore, the biogenic ZnO-NPs stimulated the content of chlorophylls, carotenoids, and anthocyanin. Finally, the study of malondialdehyde content (MDA) as a marker of the oxidative status further highlighted the beneficial and positive action of the biogenic ZnO-NPs on maize.

In the field of nanotechnology and nanoscience, transition metal oxides based nanocomposites (TMONCs) are promising for various application uses such as Supercapacitors, Sensors, Bactericidal properties, Photocatalytic Degradation, Solar Cells etc. Modification of transition metal oxide nanoparticles (TMONPs) to TMONCs by doping/mixing of another transition metal and metal oxide, carbon based nanoparticles, conducting polymers etc. to achieve enhanced surface area, increasing surface activities or number of active surface sites, reducing electron-hole recombination, increasing charge transfer processes etc. have been reported in literature. These improved properties are the possible reason for the enhancement in its practical applications efficiencies. This review summarizes recent development on transition metal oxides based nanocomposites for different potential applications. Also synthesis methods of transition metal oxide based nanocomposites have obtained an increasing attractions to achieve cost effectiveness and environment friendly routes of synthesis with high rate of production, high yield of product and also less toxic waste production. Transition metal oxides nanocomposites have been fabricated by various methods such as Microwave assisted synthesis technique, Sol-Gel method, Biosynthesis method, Co-precipitation process, Simple Chemical method etc. Different morphologies of transition metal oxides based nanocomposites have been summarized in this review article. Herein, this paper discuss about several reported synthesis techniques, various characterization techniques used for structural and surface properties identifications, different morphologies and various potential applications of transition metal oxide based nanocomposites.

Structural and thermal properties of pure and chromium doped zinc oxide nanoparticles

Pure ZnO and Cr-doped ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized via a facile chemical co-precipitation route and their structural, thermal characteristics were discussed systematically. In the experimental producer, the doping concentration has varied the range, 0.05–0.1 M, while calcined at 600 °C. The influence of Cr-doping on the physical characteristics of ZnO nanoparticles was investigated and addressed. As-prepared samples were analyzed via XRD, FTIR, TGA/DTA, BET, and ICP-MS. XRD analysis shows that ZnO and Cr doped ZnO nanoparticles with average particle sizes between 23 and 39 nm were successfully developed with hexagonal wurtzite structure. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis confirms the existence of chromium in the doped ZnO nanoparticles and the formation of ZnO. The TGA/DTA analysis shows that Cr–ZnO nanoparticles are more thermally stable than ZnO nanoparticles. Moreover, the dopant concentration has been analyzed via ICP-MS and showed a good agreement with the expected chromium concentration. The BET surface area measurement shows that 176.25 m2/g and 287.17 m2/g for un-doped ZnO, and 0.1 M Cr-doped ZnO nanoparticles, respectively. Hence, doping of Cr enhances the surface area and thermal stability. Thus, Cr–ZnO nanoparticles show good thermal stability, and high surface area, which is an excellent characteristices of nanomaterials. Graphic abstract
