Phytoconstituents of Adenanthera pavonina Linn from the bark extracts

Abstract: Background: Adenanthera pavonina L. is an important medicinal plant and its barks are used in traditional medicine for treating different diseases. Therefore, a phytochemical investigation was carried out to isolate and identify secondary metabolites from its barks. Results: Seven compounds namely ethyl 3,3-dimethyl-13-hydroxytridecanoate (1), stigmasta-5,22-dien-3β-ol (2), tert.butyl tridecanoate (3), 6-α-hydroxy stigmast-20(21)-en-3-one (4) of dichloromethane extract and 18-(2′, 3′dihydroxyphenyl)nonadec-17-… Show more

“…Free stigmasterol (1), stigmasterol glucoside (2), βsitosterol (3), β-sitosterol glucoside (4) and αspinasterol glucoside (5) were isolated from the leaves, seeds and seed kernels through chromatographic techniques [9,[13][14]19]. In another separation from the bark extract, dichloromethane extract yielded stigmasta-5,22-dien-3-ol (6) and 6--hydroxy stigmast-20(21)-en-3-one (7), whereas stigmast-5(6), 20(21)-diene-3-one (8) was obtained from ethyl acetate extract [26].…”

“…On the other hand, Mujahid et al, (2016) also discovered a fatty alcohol called n-tricosanol (55) in the methanolic extract of the leaves [34]. Later on, Ara et al, (2019) isolated an aliphatic alcohol ethyl 3,3dimethyl-13-hydroxytridecanoate (56) from the dichloromethane extract and an aromatic alcohol 18-(2, 3-dihydroxyphenyl)nonadec-17-en-2-ol (57) from the ethyl acetate extract of the bark part [26].…”

“…Lectins bind to specific monosaccharides or oligosaccharides present on cell surfaces (Delporte et al, 2015;Van Holle and Van Damme, 2015). The ability of lectins to agglutinate cells allows them to function as quasi-antibodies against pathogens, and several lectins have been found to possess antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties (Silva et al, 2020;Ara et al, 2019;Hamed et al, 2017;Wang et al, 2017;Ingale and Hivrale, 2013;Qadir et al, 2013). These make lectinsa promisingly efficient and cost-effective means fortreatingdiseases in humans.…”
