Phytochemical screening and the effect of Trichosanthes dioica in high‐fat diet induced atherosclerosis in Wistar rats

Abstract: Trichosanthes dioica fruit pericarp has a powerful hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties. Wistar rats were divided into five groups (n = 30). The normal control group received vehicle and standard diet throughout the experimental period. Groups II, III, IV, and V were given a high-fat diet and free access of water for 21 days. Experimental groups IV and V were given high-fat diet along with T. dioica extract 400 and 800 mg/kg, respectively. Blood was collected at 21 days, and lipid profile estimation was pe… Show more

“… 36 , 37 In the current study, rats fed on HFD showed an increase in body weight and high levels of plasma TC, TGs, LDL, and oxidative damage to tissues of the aorta, as already reported in previous studies. 38 - 40 Hypercholesterolemia causes an increase in free radical generation and change in lipid peroxide levels. It also promotes oxidative stress, which leads to higher amounts of oxidized LDL.…”

“…Adding BHT into the system can improve the results (Tsikas, 2017). Although with the disadvantage of nonspecificity, it is still considered the gold standard for the determination of LPO for its simplicity as well as low cost, and is widely used in antioxidant screening (Félix et al, 2020; Khan et al, 2021; Oyeniran et al, 2021; Shrivastava et al, 2021).…”

“…The anti-oxidant assay was done by using the methods explained in previous studies. DPPH ● scavenging activity [ 30 ], Hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity [ 31 ], Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity [ 32 ], Metal chelating activity [ 33 ], Nitric oxide scavenging activity [ 34 ], Ferric reducing power [ 34 ], and Total antioxidant activity [ 26 ].…”
