PHYTOCHEMICAL EXAMINATION OFDRACAENA MANNIISTEM BARK

Abstract: The stem bark of Dracaena manni BAKER was extracted with light petroleum (40-60° C), chloroform and ethanol successively. The solids from both the light petroleum and ethanol fraction showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Palrnitic acid, an unidentified gummy material and heptacosane were found in the petroleum ether fraction whilst the ethanolic fraction consisted mainly o f a~nmonizt?n nitrate.

“…Phytochemical screening of the individual aqueous herbal extracts was performed using previously published protocols [22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. The Frothing test for saponins [29]; Fehling's test for reducing sugars [29]; the Ferric chloride test for phenolic compounds, polyuronides, and cyanogenic glycosides; Mayer's test for alkaloids; Shinoda's test for flavonoids; and the Salkoski test for triterpenes and phytosterols were performed [29]. The presence of anthracenosides was also determined using a protocol described in Benmehdi et al's study [25].…”

“…Evaporation of the solvent under reduced pressure (40 • C) provided the extracts. A preliminary phytochemical screening investigated the presence of alkaloids (Dragendorff"s test), saponins (foam formation), flavonoids (diphenylboryloxyethylamine-polyethylene glycol reagent), terpenoids (Liebermann-Bouchardat's test) and tannins (FeCl 3 ) according to standard methods (Sofowora and Olaniyi, 1975;Wagner and Bladt, 1996).…”

“…The chemical compounds isolated from Bryophyllum pinnatum are used as folk medicines against many ailments such as hypertension and kidney stones, (Lans, 2006) pulmonary infections, rheumatoid arthritis, etc (Quaziet al, 2011). Bryophyllum pinnatum leaves are used as an antifungal (Sofowora, 1993) and anti-allergic agent (Pal et al,1991). The oxidative activity was detected by DPPH and Nitric oxide free radical scavenging method.…”
