A Colony of Bulinus (Ph~opsis) globosus has been established in our laboratory for testing for molluscicidal activity in Nigerian medicinal plants. The snails were established with slight modification of the method of M~C L~. I . L A N I ) [7]. 181 plant extracts employed in Nigerian herbal medicine were screened for molluscicidal activity following the W.H. 0. method [ I ] with laboratory reared snails of known age. Only 23 (12.7 %) of these plant extracts, however, showed 100 % mortatility to the snails at a concentration of I00 ppm of extract.
A study on Cymbopogon citratus resulted in the isolatioiz of P-Sitosterol, Hexaconsanol and Triacontanol from the light petroleum extract. From the basic fraction, an alkaloid was isolated while the neutral fraction yielded a saponin glucoside, the aglycone of which is thought to be fucosterol or a closely related compound.
