Phytochemical Content, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Effects of Thapsia garganica L. Leaves and Roots Grown Wild in North-west Algeria

Abstract: Background: Oxygen-centre free radicals and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) are continuously produced in vivo, resulting in cell death and tissues damage. Besides, the increasing resistance to existing antimicrobial agents has become a major problem. The present study aims to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the Thapsia garganica L. leaves and roots. Methods: Broth dilution and single spore methods were developed and seven microorganisms were used. The evaluation was performed by me… Show more

“…The antioxidant activity of Thapsia garganica essential oils is attributed to the presence of flavonoid compounds (Chibani et al, 2014;Aici and Benmehdi, 2021;Meratate et al, 2022) that act by inhibiting enzymes that produce free radicals, neutralizing them, or regenerating antioxidant systems. This has been confirmed by several studies on the same plant.…”

“…Being the reservoir of pharmacologically important secondary metabolites, the plants have been exploited for the discovery of such natural compounds having potential in the health care industry for novel drug development properties (Djahida and Houcine, 2021). In the present study, Phytochemical Screening and Antibacterial Potential of Methanol, Ethanol and Aqueous Extracts from Seed, Bark and Leaf of... all the extracts from different plant parts viz.…”

“…[26] The decoction of the roots was beneficial for digestive disorders. [27] Several biological activities have emerged for this species, comprising cytotoxic, [28] allelopathic, [29] antimicrobial, antioxidant, [30] and antiproliferative. [31] Recent reviews on acute implication of synthetic insecticides affecting both human health and environment, have forced agricultural industries to search biorational alternatives.…”
