Phytochemical, Anti-inflammatory and Analgesic Studies of the Crude Ethanolic Leaf Extract of Globimetular brounii Van Tieghem (Family: Loranthaceae)

Abstract: Globimetula braunii is a bushy parasitic plant growing on Terminalia catappa, which has a variety of use in African traditional medicine. The leaves of the plant was subjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis, Acute Toxicity studies and analgesic activity using Hot plate and acetic acid induced pain method in mice, while the anti-inflammatory activity was tested using Carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats. The Phytochemical analysis of the ethanolic leaf extract of Globimetula braunii revealed the presen… Show more

“…Preliminary phytochemical screening of methanol stem extract of Globimetula braunii growing on Terminalia catappa showed the presence of flavonoids, steroids, triterpenes and saponins (Table 1). The findings of this study is corroborative with previous findings [12,19]. However, in this study alkaloids were found to be absent from the stem part of Globimetula braunii, this might be due to the difference in the part of plant used or the season at which plant was collected [20].…”

“…These plants contain various phytochemical compounds that include phenolic acids, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, terpenes, lignans, steroids, coumarins, anthraquinones, edotides, xanthones and sesquiterpene lactone [5] [6]. Previous studies have reported that flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenolic acids and alkaloids present in different medicinal plants have both analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities [7] [8]. Among the medicinal plant used include P. dodecandra.…”
