SUMMARY:The morphology of the gastrointestinal tract of adult Nile perch was described using standard SEM procedures. Investigations revealed the presence of cardiform teeth in the oral cavity, goblet cells and finger print-like microridges on the hard palate and oesophagus lumenal surface. Elaborate patterns and bacterial cells were observed on the stomach lumenal surface and intense foldings in the intestinal region. These observations provide a better understanding of the morphology of the gut in Nile perch and how it is suited for its digestive function.
Background: Pain is a common problem encountered in daily life among humans and animal and it is commonly managed conventionally using modern medicines and traditionally by use of medicinal plants. Phytolacca dodecandra is a common herb in Uganda, used traditionally to alleviate pain and inflammatory conditions. However, its activity in alleviating pain and inflammatory diseases has not been fully scientifically evaluated. Aim of Study: To evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of total crude leaf extracts of P. dodecandra in Wistar albino rats. Materials and Methods: It was a laboratory-based experimental study. Acetic acid-induced writhing test was used to determine the analgesic activity and the histamine-induced paw edema formation for anti-inflammatory activity of the extract. Twenty eight animals were divided into 7 groups each with 4 rats and two (2) sets of data were obtained from each animal per group as per guidance of the refinement rule of 3Rs. For analgesic activity, Group I was dosed with 1.0ml of normal saline (negative control), group II, III, IV, V, VI were dosed with 1000.0, 600.0, 150.0, 40.0 and 5.0 mg/kg bwt of extract respectively. Group VII was dosed 10.0 mg/kg bwt diclofenac sodium (Na) drug (positive control). For anti-inflammatory activity, Group I was dosed with 1.0ml of normal saline (negative control), Group II, III, IV, V, VI were dosed with 1000.0, 600.0, 300.0, 40.0 and 5.0 mg/kg bwt of extract respectively. Group VII was dosed 10.0 mg/kg bwt diclofenac Na. The percentage mean paw volume inhibition and percentage writhing protection were determined. Results: The mean percentage paw volume inhibitions were 29.1%, 74.2% and 32.
Gonadal development and structure were examined in 317 Nile perch, Lates niloticus, of 4 to 157 cm SL taken from Lake Victoria, Uganda, in 2005-2006. Macroscopic and histological investigation showed a differentiated gonochoristic pattern, with no juvenile intersexuality. Oogonial cells (9.8 ± 3.0 μm) developed through six distinct stages: chromatin nucleolar oocyte (16.2 ± 3.3 μm), perinucleolar oocyte (33.8 ± 12.1 μm), late perinucleolar oocyte (74.8 ± 16.5 μm), cortical alveolar oocyte (122.6 ± 38.8 μm), secondary oocyte (260.9 ± 61.2 μm) and tertiary oocyte (475.5 ± 70.7 μm). L. niloticus was found to be an asynchronous spawner. The collection of female brood fish for induced spawning should aim at fish with an oocyte size of 475.5 ± 70.7 μm. Four main developmental stages were identified in the testis: spermatogonia (A and B), primary and secondary spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa. Testicular structure conformed to the lobular and cystic type. Copious amounts of sperm were exuded from ripe males when slight pressure was applied on the belly. Milt could therefore be obtained by stripping.
SUMMARY:The ultrastructure of the gastrointestinal tract of Nile perch was described using Transmission Electron Microscopy standard procedures. Investigations revealed the presence of mucous cells, blood vessels and oil droplets plus several nerve cells and muscle bundles in the oral cavity. Further observations revealed columnar epithelial cells in the oesophagus, with a ragged surface, high electron dense cytoplasm, intercellular spaces, mitochondria and mucus granules. The lamina propria of the oesophagus was composed of loose connective tissue, blood vessels, nerve cells and several leucocytes, while the muscularis externa was composed of striated muscle bundles with the a Z line, A band and I band. The stomach was characterized by mucosal glandular cells with electron dense granules, a prominent nucleus, mitochondria, and secretory canaliculi. The liver had an isotropic parenchyma composed of several hepatocytes with a single spherical euchromatic nucleus. The exocrine pancreatic cells in the liver occurred around large blood vessels, had large centrally positioned nuclei with electron dense nucleolus, electron dense granules, Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, and mitochondria which dominated the cytoplasm of pancreatic cells.
