Background: Ginger (Zingiber officinale (L.) Rosc) has been used as spice for over 2000 years. Its roots and the obtained extracts contain polyphenol compounds (6-gingerol and its derivatives), which have a high antioxidant activity. Methods for the characterization of antioxidants are presented and illustrated by their application to commercial ginger preparations, since it has been widely speculated that ginger might be beneficial to human health because it exerts antioxidant activity. This study aimed to investigate antioxidant effect of in red ginger (zingiber officinale var. rubrum) extract during the COVID-19 pandemic. Subjects and Method:This was an experimental study. A sample of red ginger extract involved five drink instant products. These products were assessed to measure the antioxidant level. Antioxidant activity was examined by soaking in radical free of 1,1difenil-2-pikrilhidrazil using UV-Vis Spectrophotometry. Results:The study showed that instant ginger sample A was included in the category of moderate antioxidant activity, while the other four instant ginger samples B, C, D, and E were included in the category of weak antioxidant activity. Furthermore, for the positive control, vitamin C is included in the category of very strong antioxidant activity. Conclusion:The instant red ginger product from the research results showed that four of the five samples belonged to the category of weak antioxidant activity.

The utilization of Binahong leaves or Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Stennis as a medicinal plant in livestock production and health, has garnered significant attention in recent years. This review paper aims to comprehensively analyze the diverse potential benefits of Binahong leaves in enhancing livestock well-being and productivity. With a focus on its applications in the livestock sector, this review encompasses multiple facets, including the phytochemical composition of Binahong leaves, their pharmacological activities, and their impact on animal health and production. The phytochemical profile of Binahong leaves is examined in detail, highlighting the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and alkaloids, which contribute to their medicinal properties. These compounds exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory activities, making Binahong leaves a promising natural remedy for addressing health challenges in livestock. Furthermore, the review explores the potential mechanisms by which Binahong leaves can improve livestock health. These mechanisms involve the enhancement of immune responses, the reduction of oxidative stress, and the mitigation of common ailments in animals. Additionally, the effects of Binahong leaves on livestock growth, reproduction, and overall production are discussed, emphasizing their role in sustainable livestock farming. In ruminants, Binahong is beneficial for therapy in Gastroenteritis caused by Bacillus subtilis, for the treatment of eye infections, for overcoming drug resistance in E. coli, and for mastitis therapy in dairy cattle. This review paper suggests the potential utilization of Binahong as an herbal plant or alternative medicine for general health and, specifically, for enhancing livestock productivity.

Abstract. Navia ZI, Adnan, Harmawan T, Suwardi AB. 2022. Ethnobotanical study of wild medicinal plants in Serbajadi protected forest of East Aceh District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4959-4970. The Serbajadi protected forest of East Aceh District has high biodiversity including medicinal plants which have been utilized by the community as traditional medicine. However, their knowledge of ethnobotanical uses of medicinal plants is threatened due to the lack of written records and the rapid socio-cultural changes as a consequence of economic development. Therefore, this study aims to study wild medicinal plants and traditional knowledge in the Serbajadi protected forest, East Aceh District, Indonesia. This study used a combination of data collection methods, namely field surveys, plant collections, and community interviews. The snowball sampling technique was used to select 320 interviewees. The results showed that local people use 88 different wild medicinal plant species from 78 genera and 46 families to treat 32 different diseases. The most common ailments to cure are fever, cough, and diarrhea. Ageratum conyzoides is the most known medicinal plant species with a relative frequency citation index of 0.97, while Acorus calamus is the most commonly used medicinal plant in the local community with a use value index of 0.99. Furthermore, locals identified leaves (75%) as the most commonly used plant part and decoction (55%) as the most common method of administering traditional medicine. The elders know more about medicinal plants than the younger generation, indicating that traditional knowledge is eroding as generations pass. In order to ensure the sustainability of medicinal plants and the preservation of traditional knowledge in the future, the initiative to preserve medicinal plants must be increased, particularly among the younger generation.
