Dengue is an arbovirus mainly vectored by Aedes mosquitoes. Its prevention and control depends to effective vector control measures. Cancer causes millions of death every year. Most of the anticancer drugs have high toxicity and low specificity of action, leading to systemic toxicity and severe side effects. Thus, the development of effective tools is a priority. We fabricated zinc oxide nanoparticles using the Myristica fragrans extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Nanoparticles were studied using UV-vis spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, zeta potential, dynamic light scattering, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. ZnO nanorods were highly effective against A. aegypti young instars, with LC 50 ranging from 3.44 (larva I) to 14.63 ppm (pupa). Nanorods showed adult LC 50 of 15.004 ppm. ZnO nanorods exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxicity against human hepato-cancer cells (HepG2). After 48 and 24 h of incubation, the IC 50 were 20 and 22 lg/ml, respectively. Nanorods triggered the induction of apoptosis. Overall, this study highlights that the possibility to employ M. fragrans-synthesized ZnO nanorods in mosquito control, as well as in the development of novel chemotherapeutic agents with reduced systemic toxicity.

Objective: To synthesize silver nanoparticles from leaves extract of Hydnocarpus Pentandra (H. Pentandra) and test the anti-cancer activity of synthesized silver nanoparticles against breast cancer cell line (MCF-7 cells). Method: Ten milliliter of leaves extract was mixed with 10 mL of aqueous 1 mM silver nitrate solution and kept in an incubator shaker system at 37 ºC for 24 hours. During this period, yellowish to reddish-brown color changes was observed. Characterization of silver nanoparticles using UV-vis spectrophotometry and SEM analysis were performed. Antioxidant activity of silver nanoparticles was performed using DPPH method. Anti-cancer activity of silver nanoparticles was tested using in vitro cytotoxicity test with 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide against MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Results: UV-vis spectral analysis indicated the sliver surface plasmon resonance band at 438 nm. SEM analysis showed that silver nanoparticles to be spherical in shape with a size in the range of 141 nm to 202 nm. The synthesized silver nanoparticles exhibited antioxidant activity at dose dependent manner using DPPH method. The synthesized silver nanoparticles efficiently reduced the viability of MCF-7 breast cancer cells in a dose dependent manner. Conclusion: It has been demonstrated that the leaves extract of Hydnocarpus Pentandra could produce silver nanoparticles and the silver nanoparticles are quite stable in solution. Further studies are needed to characterize the mechanism involved with anti-cancer activity of the silver nanoparticles.

We set out to demonstrate that vegetal cells have similar sensitivity to some toxic agents as animal cells, in which case a statistical correlation could be established. A series of new compounds synthesized by the Romanian National Institute for Chemical Pharmaceutical Research and Development as potential β3 adrenergic receptors agonists were tested for their acute toxicity using classic animal exposure models, before investigating possible anti-diabetic and anti-obesity effects. We then determined whether similar conclusions might be reached exposing vegetal material to the same agents. We successfully demonstrated that plants are affected in a very similar way as animals when exposed to some potentially toxic agents, providing new possibilities for ending unethical animal experiments.Acne conglobata is a rare, severe form of acne vulgaris characterized by the presence of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and sometimes hematic or meliceric crusts, located on the face, trunk, neck, arms and buttocks.
