Physiological characteristics and cold tolerance of overwintering eggs in Gomphocerus sibiricus L. (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

Abstract: Gomphocerus sibiricus L., the dominant insect species in the alpine and subalpine grassland, overwinters with diapause at egg stage. In this study, cold tolerance and related cryoprotectants of G. sibiricus eggs were investigated. In particular, the supercooling point (SCP), water content, carbohydrates (trehalose, glucose, fructose, glycogen), polyols (glycerol, inositol, sorbitol), fat, and amino acids contents were evaluated at different developmental stages of G. sibiricus eggs collected under natural cond… Show more

“…The way cells regulate the stabilization of macromolecules at low water content conditions (freezing and drought) could also be explained by the reversibility of DESs formation and dilution. In psychrophilic bactera, 92 diapausing insects 93,94 ( e.g. grasshoppers and spiders), amphibians 51 ( e.g.…”

“…The Italian locust, Asian Migratory locust, and Siberian locust are common pests in steppe, desert, and semidesert regions. Due to their longdistance migrations, the locusts can at times be found in the territories ranging from the Ukraine to southern Siberia, eastern Kazakhstan, and northwestern China, causing severe damage to local steppe ecosystems and agricultural production (Jamal et al, 2021;Song et al, 2021). The occurrence of locust infestations is continuous and results from a combination of environmental factors and ecological conditions.…”

“…The species share some similarities in bioecology and population dynamics, and therefore some overlap in habitat selection [ 3 , 4 ]. The Italian locust is often found from Ukraine to southern Siberia, eastern Kazakhstan, and northwestern China, while the Asian locust and Siberian locust have a much wider range, covering the entire temperate and steppe regions of Eurasia, causing severe damage to local steppe ecosystems and agricultural production [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]. The occurrence of locust infestations is continuous and results from a combination of environmental factors and ecological conditions.…”
