Physiological and Sport-Specific Skill Response of Olympic Youth Soccer Athletes

Abstract: Although many studies have been focused on soccer athletes, no comprehensive studies have been conducted on adolescent soccer athletes in the United States. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to quantify the physiological and sport-specific skill characteristics of Olympic Developmental Program (ODP) soccer athletes by age group and game experience. Following written, informed consent, 59 male athletes (age = 14.6 +/- 2.0 years; wt = 60.5 +/- 1.4 kg; ht = 172.4 +/- 1.2 cm) completed a battery of tests to… Show more

“…While the standard T-test, pro shuttle, and long shuttle are basic criteria for the assessment of sports-related agility, 10,38,49 they may not adequately measure side-to-side differences, due to the equalization of cutting directions in performance of the test. For this reason, we modified these agility measures to increase reliance on a single limb during the task.…”

“…Although the task of juggling a ball occurs infrequently during actual match play, juggling tests have been used as a test of soccer coordination (Hoare & Warr, 2000; Rösch et al, 2000; Vanderford et al, 2004). The tests typically involve tapping the ball with various body parts, while keeping the ball in the air, within a set time limit (see Table 2 for detailed methodology).…”

“…These tests require players to pass the ball through the air against a wall, control the rebound and make further air‐borne passes against the wall, typically with a set time limit and toward specific target areas on the wall (Reilly & Holmes, 1983; McMorris et al, 1994; Vanderford et al, 2004;Table 2). Although a number of attributes are being assessed (including passing accuracy and control), this type of repeated wall‐volley passing lacks ecological validity.…”
