Physicochemical Properties and Pollen Profile of Oak Honeydew and Evergreen Oak Honeydew Honeys from Spain: A Comparative Study

Abstract: This work investigates the similarities and differences of oak honeydew (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.) and evergreen honeydew (Quercus ilex L.) honey produced in Spain. For this purpose, the physicochemical characteristics of 17 samples from oak honeydew and 11 samples from evergreen honeydew collected in different geographical regions were analyzed. All the samples accomplished European Union requirements for honey consumption. Both honey types had amber dark color; however, the evergreen oak honey was clearer th… Show more

“…Th e most prevalent sugar in honeydew is fructose, followed by glucose and sucrose. Th ese results are in accordance with other literature data (Kirs et al, 2011;Kivrak et al, 2017;Sousa et al, 2016;Sergalio et al, 2019;Seijo et al, 2019). In general, the glucose content was lower than the fructose content, which indicated the natural feeding of bee colonies and confi rmed the high quality of the examined honeydew honeys.…”

“…Little information is available about the honeydew production in Algeria, and knowledge about sources of this honey is scarce. However, it was the subject of a great number of recent studies in other territories [ 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ]. Considering the interest of this honey type, and that differentiation between different types of honeydew honey or even other dark blossom honey is difficult [ 47 ], more studies regarding this honey type could be useful to valorize local honey production.…”

“…The area had mainly an Atlantic vegetation with the predominance of deciduous forest and areas of scrubland. Among the woodland deciduous taxa, it is highlighted due its abundance and the importance for beekeeping, chestnut trees (mostly some different cultivars of Castanea sativa ) and for their honeydew secretion, oak trees (primarily Q. pyrenaica and hybrids) [24,43]. Concerning the shrub, the predominance of some species of brooms (mainly from the genus Cytisus and Genista ) growing near heathers (primarily Erica ) with high bee value for honey production is noted [44].…”
