Bael or Aegle marmelos Corrêa is considered a sacred tree by Hindus and is offered to Lord Shiva while worshipping. It grows in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia and is called by various names in different regions. Bael has been used as a traditional medicine in India and other Southeast Asian countries to treat various ailments, including diarrhea, chronic dysentery, constipation, gonorrhea, catarrh, diabetes, deafness, inflammations, ulcerated intestinal mucosa, intermittent fever, melancholia, heart palpitation, and also to control fertility. The ethnomedicinal properties of Bael are owing to its ability to synthesize alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, anthocyanins, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, terpenoids, tannins, lignins, quinones, coumarins, proteins, carbohydrates, amino acids, reducing sugars, fats, and oils. The aegeline, auroptene, umbelliferone, psoralene, marmin, imperatorin, xylorhamnoarabinogalactan I pectic polysaccharide and skimmianine are synthesized by different parts of Bael, and they have shown antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-allergic, anthelmintic, antidiabetic, anticancer, cardioprotective and neuroprotective activities in various experimental models. The present review has been written consulting various publications, and different websites including Google Scholar, Pubmed, ScienceDirect, and Google.

Plants are essential to the survival of every species on Earth. Animal and plant life have a history of mutual consumption since antiquity. Earth's sole producers are plant is a fact. As researchers learn more about plants, this assumption is being challenged. The Rutaceae family's citrus species Aegle marmelos (Bael), a well-known medicinal herb, has a lengthy study history. In addition to its useful nutrients, A. marmelos produces a wide range of secondary metabolites, or phytochemicals, during its whole life cycle. Roots, bark, stems, leaves, fruit, and flowers are all used by humans in some way or another obtained from the A. marmelos plant. In current years, the pandemic of viral diseases have been spreading worldwide, which causes death in humans globally. It leads to the scientific community to investigate on the antiviral phytochemicals against viral diseases. Medicinal herbs possess a variety of phytochemicals that harbour antiviral properties, which are advantages over conventional drug therapy due to their broad therapeutic potency and minimum or no adverse effects. Medicinal plants synthesize and possess a variety of biochemical products useful for therapeutic use, helps in inhibition of viruses. Based on this basis, literature search, discussion with local authority and online search were performed, which helped to identify five most dominant plant species in Bankura District, West Bengal, having bioactive compound and antiviral properties. This mini-review provides information of those five dominant Ayurvedic medicinal plants for their broad spectrum medicinal values in general and effect on viral infections in particular.
