Physicochemical analysis of water and sediments of Usuma Dam, Abuja, Nigeria

Abstract: Usuma Dam is the major source of potable water in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. The physicochemical properties of water and sediment of the dam was assessed in this study to determine its quality. Electrical conductivity, pH, nitrate, phosphate, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, chloride, total hardness, phosphate, nitrate and sulfate were determined in the water samples. Total organic matter, total o… Show more

“…The mean TDS (79.84 + 6.52 mg/L) observed in this study was within the recommended limit for drinking water (WHO 2017) and for fish in the water (FAO 2006). A similar finding was also recorded by (Ilechukwu et al 2020) in Usuma Dam. However, Kalgwai dam, (Edegbene 2020) recorded contrast values at three different sites that ranged from 108.5 to 141.8 mg/L.…”

“…Transportation of legacy pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls, petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals from road soils to aquatic ecosystems have been reported in literature. [14][15][16][17] Also, microplastics have been reported to be transported from roadside soils and dusts into aquatic ecosystems. [18][19][20] Furthermore, vehicle parts and tires are significant sources of microplastics due to wear and tear as well as friction between tires and road surfaces leading to release of tire particles on the road.…”

“…A good and balance quality water is essential for the subsistence of all living organism. The availability of water in sufficient quantity is as important as its quality [2]. Quality of water is a function of the concentration of various solutes at a given place and time [3 4].…”
