Physico‐chemical properties of MTA and a novel experimental cement

Abstract: The experimental cement released calcium and increased the pH of the storage solutions in a similar manner to MTA-Angelus. However, EC showed significantly higher calcium release than commercial MTA-Angelus after 24 h.

“…The amounts of the calcium released were assessed by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer with a calcium-specific cathode lamp. This is an extensively described method 20,30) . MTA stimulated hard tissue deposition and it has been suggested that this important formation mechanism started with calcium ions release from MTA 31) .…”

“…However it is very important that physicochemical properties of MTA containing SZ be considered in relation to their use because such filling material should present biocompatibility, adequate setting time, insolubility and antimicrobial activity 17) . MTA is a Portland cement and is powder of hydrophilic particles consisting of compounds of tricalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate, tricalcium oxide and silicate oxide [18][19][20] . The physicochemical characteristics of MTA depend on the particle size, the powder/liquid ratio, the temperature and presence of water 21) .…”

“…MTA is a white or grey powder which sets when there is moisture 2,3 . MTA primarily consists of tricalcium silicate (3CaD.SiD 2 ), dicalcium silicate (2CaD.SiD 2 ) 4,5 as binder phases, and bismuth oxide to increase its radiopacity 1 .…”
