Physicians’ knowledge and practice towards medical error reporting: a cross-sectional hospital-based study in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Identifying reasons for under-reporting is crucial in reducing the incidence of medical errors. We studied physicians' knowledge of the occurrence, frequency and causes of medical errors and their actual practice toward reporting them. A cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire was answered by 107 physicians at a tertiary-care hospital in Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire had 6 sections covering demographic data, knowledge, attitudes and practice towards reporting medical errors, perceived causes of and … Show more

“…Among the diagnostic errors, delayed diagnosis was high (84.8%), wrong diagnosis, inappropriate investigation and failure to use results as recorded (16.5, 63.9, and 69%, respectively) were listed. Also, failure to provide prophylactic treatment was observed among 69.6% of the healthcare providers; these results are in agreement with previous studies [10,[26][27][28]. This finding is consistent with a report in which medical errors where reportedly the main contributory factors towards the patients harm [29].…”

“…In their original article published in the Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal entitled "Physicians' knowledge and practice towards medical error reporting: a cross-sectional hospital-based study in Saudi Arabia" Alsafi et al used a questionnaire to assess physicians' knowledge and their practice in reporting medical errors (1). However, it is not clear how physicians' knowledge related to medical error reporting, nor it is clear how the reported physician's practices could provide the actual reasons for under-reporting or minimizing the recurrence of avoidable patterns of higher error rates.…”
