Objective: Anaphylaxis is under-recognized and undertreated by physicians, indicating critical knowledge gaps. This study aimed to assess the knowledge levels of anaphylaxis among family physicians (FPs) as they are the primary first-line healthcare providers and identify the factors influencing their knowledge levels. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study using an internet-based Google Forms questionnaire was conducted among voluntary FPs in Sivas, Turkey. Demographic features, including age, years in practice, career position, and knowledge related to the diagnosis and management of anaphylaxis in children were assessed. Results: A total of 149 FPs participated in the survey (34 [24.3%] general practitioners [GPs], 20 [14.3%] contracted family physicians [CFPs], 74 [52.9%] residents in training [RITs], and 12 [8.6%] specialists). The number of participants who correctly answered all questions regarding diagnosis, acute treatment, and epinephrine auto-injector use was 11 (7.9%), 52 (37.4%), and 27 (19.3%), respectively. In diagnosing anaphylaxis, 100 (72.5%) participants were unaware that anaphylaxis can occur without skin manifestations, and only 48 (34.8%) identified gastrointestinal symptoms as a possible anaphylaxis presentation. RITs (11, 14.9%) and specialists (2, 16.7%) had better performance on the questionnaire, with higher proportions of participants who answered all questions correctly, compared to GPs (2, 5.9%) and CFPs (1, 5.0%). Attendance at an educational activity in the last year was the only independent factor associated with answering all questionnaire items correctly. Conclusion: There is a need to improve anaphylaxis recognition and management among all FPs regardless of their career position and work experience, underlining the importance of regular and updated educational interventions.

Background Anaphylaxis is defined as a severe, life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction. Healthcare professionals must recognize the symptoms, apply correct treatment immediately, and provide epinephrine auto-injectors (EAI) to patients who experience anaphylaxis. Objective In this study, we aimed to investigate the knowledge of healthcare professionals regarding anaphylaxis. Methods This cross-sectional study, which was conducted between February 2022 and March 2022, included healthcare professionals working in various hospitals in Turkey. A survey consisting of 21 questions which concerned with the demographic data, personal experience and level of knowledge about anaphylaxis was applied to healthcare professionals. Results The study included a total of 301 participants, comprising 160 specialist physicians (53.16%), 86 resident physicians (28.57%), 31 family physicians (10.3%), and 24 allied health personnel (7.97%). Most of the healthcare professionals (93%) chose epinephrine as the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis. Two hundred ten participants (69.77%) knew the correct dose of epinephrine in the treatment of anaphylaxis, and allied healthcare professionals had least knowledge ( p = 0.009). The participants who received anaphylaxis training and had experience with anaphylaxis had a higher knowledge about epinephrine dosing ( p < 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively). Only 49.17% of the participants knew the epinephrine doses of EAIs, and only 19% of participants had prescribed an EAI. Conclusion Our results showed that healthcare professionals’ knowledge about epinephrine doses in the treatment of anaphylaxis was not sufficient. Furthermore, the prescribing rate of EAIs was still inadequate. There is a need for national training programs to increase and update the knowledge of healthcare professionals to reduce anaphylaxis mortality.

Aim:The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of knowledge about anaphylaxis among resident physicians working in a tertiary care hospital in Istanbul. Materyal and Methods:Our descriptive study was conducted with resident physicians working in a tertiary hospital in Istanbul.A questionnaire including questions about the diagnosis and treatment of anaphylaxis was administered to physicians. Results:172 resident physicians were surveyed within the scope of the study.While 47.0% (n=79) of the physicians were internal medicine residents, 53.0%(n=89) were surgical medicine residents. In terms of duration of employment in the profession, 76.2% (n=131) had a working period of 5 years or less.Median age was 29.0 years; minimum age was 25.0 years and maximum age was 53.0 years.All resident physicians felt that anaphylaxis could be life-threatening.The rate of those who correctly knew the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of anaphylaxis was 63.4% (n=109).The rate of those who knew that adrenaline was the first-line drug in the treatment of anaphylaxis was 95.9% (n=165).While 86.6% (n=149) of the physicians answered that adrenaline was administered intramuscularly, 70.0% (n=119) correctly answered the dose of adrenaline and 76.0% (n=130) correctly answered the name of the muscle where adrenaline was administered.The proportion of physicians who stated that anaphylaxis patients should be followed up for 24 to 72 hours was significantly higher in surgical branches (82.0%; n=73) than in internal branches (68.4%; n=54) (p
