Physician nutrition and cognition during work hours: effect of a nutrition based intervention

Abstract: BackgroundPhysicians are often unable to eat and drink properly during their work day. Nutrition has been linked to cognition. We aimed to examine the effect of a nutrition based intervention, that of scheduled nutrition breaks during the work day, upon physician cognition, glucose, and hypoglycemic symptoms.MethodsA volunteer sample of twenty staff physicians from a large urban teaching hospital were recruited from the doctors' lounge. “…While the findings of at least one study indicate that a lack of sufficient carbohydrate will not lead to cognitive detriments (H. R. Lieberman et al, 2008), most research indicates that regular meals improve cognition in normal daily tasks (Benton & Parker, 1998;Lemaire et al, 2010;Pollitt et al, 1998). During physically demanding tasks carbohydrate intake specifically has been demonstrated to help attenuate cognitive decline Welsh et al, 2002).…”

“…Gyakran előfordul, hogy az orvosok alig esznek és isznak munka közben, ami koncentrációs zavarokhoz vezethet [11]. A munka közbe beiktatott étkezés javítja az orvosok kognitív funkcióját, ezáltal a betegellátás minőségét is [12].…”
