Since the shrinkage of the constituent fibers represents a fundamental change during the slack mercerization of cotton yarns and fabrics, the literature on shrinkage of fibers as such in sodium hydroxide solutions has been reviewed; also that on the elastic properties of air-dry mercerized fibers in comparison with those of the original untreated fibers. It has been reported that raw cotton fibers shrink less than purified fibers. Elongation at break is increased by mercerization of fibers while they are free to shrink, but the shrunken fibers have little if any greater elastic recovery from moderate stretch than similar untreated fibers. Data are included on fibers taken from 2-ply yarns that were mercerized without tension. These fibers seem to have been completely shrunken in the yarn, in which the fibers, if free to swell, apparently shrink as a group.The tendency of cotton fibers to shrink in aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide is fundamental in treatments with that agent, which cause cotton to swell more than it does in water. An investigation on the properties of solutionstretched ring spun and rotor spun cotton yarns at regular time intervals was made. Significant changes in the properties of these yarns are observed. The changes in fine structure are evaluated by means of infra red spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. Ring spun cotton yarns exhibit better abrasion resistance than do rotor spun yarns. Abrasion resistance of NS-ring and rotor spun yarns is higher than their counter parts. WS-ring spun yarns are characterized by higher compression values, explaining the softness produced by the stretching treatment. The dyeability of the treated yarns is also studied with reactive dye, and the color values are found to be significantly greater for WS-ring and rotor spun yarns.

A study has been made of the reactions of alkali cellulose with methylene dihalides, particularly methylene dibromide. These reactions have involved cotton cellulose in a swollen state, and the treated fabrics have been found to exhibit improved wet crease recovery, with little or no effect on dry crease recovery. The rates of reaction of methylene dibromide with alkali celluloses prepared from potassium hydroxide have been found to be more than double those with alkali cellulosed prepared from sodium hydroxide. The energies of activation in both cases are about 25 kcal./mole, statistically indistinguishable for the two types of alkali, and consistent with the view that covalent bonds are being formed in the course of reaction. The implications and limitations of these results are discussed. Studies have also been made of the reactions of sodium cellulosates with methylene dibromide. In one case, the sodium cellulosates were prepared by reaction of the cellulose with sodium dissolved in liquid ammonia. Here, the reactions appear interesting, but essentially difficult to control. Sodium cellulosates were also prepared by reaction of the cellulose with sodium isoamylate in xylene. When proper care is taken to exclude water from the reaction system, it is found that the reproducibility of duplicate experiments is quite good and that the rate of reaction of the sodium cellulosate with methylene dibromide is much greater than that found for an alkali cellulose prepared from sodium hydroxide.
