Physical Properties and Consumer Reaction to Use of Compressed Wood Bricks in Southeast Alaska

Abstract: In late 2008, a group of business people and entrepreneurs in southeast Alaska became aware of a compressed wood brick product that could be used as an alternative fuel in existing wood-burning stoves and heating equipment. The product differed from many others on the market in that it contained no additive to promote binding and burn characteristics. In 2009, local materials in the form of sawmill residuals and chipped material from land clearing were collected, dried, and shipped to a producer in the northea… Show more

“…Non-destructive [3] evaluation is an important tool for the characterization of wood and can be used in industry to improve quality control process through reducing the property variation of the raw material and its by-products. The use of ultra sonic technique for wood testing offers several advantages, including the low cost of equipment compared to that of machines stress rated (MSR) and the relatively simple training in its use, which favour the method's easy dissemination at retailers and in the wood and by-product industry (Erikson et al, 2002) [4].The ultrasonic technique is used in many applications, from tree quality evaluation in forest (Huang et al, 2000) [5] to condition assessment of wood structure in service (Sandoz and Benoit, 2002) [6]. The velocity of sound in wood is influenced by species, moisture content, temperature and anatomical direction (Mishiro, 1996) [7].…”
