Physical Mechanisms and Scaling Laws ofK-Shell Double Photoionization

Abstract: We report on the photon energy dependence of the K-shell double photoionization (DPI) of Mg, Al, and Si. The DPI cross sections were derived from high-resolution measurements of x-ray spectra following the radiative decay of the K-shell double vacancy states. Our data evince the relative importance of the final-state electron-electron interaction to the DPI. By comparing the double-to-single K-shell photoionization cross-section ratios for neutral atoms with convergent close-coupling calculations for He-like i… Show more

“…Although for Mg and Al the K˛h 1 X-ray transition was much too weak to be observed, it was measured for the first time for Si. The obtained E K˛h 1 and K˛h 2 hypersatellite and E K˛˛h 2 TEOP energies are summarized in Table 2 and compared to the few existing data and the most recent theoretical calculations from Martins et al [52], Costa et al [51], Natarajan [53] and Saha et al [56]. The energies of the K˛h 2 and K˛˛h 2 transitions for lower Z elements are in good to very good agreement within the experimental uncertainties with different theoretical predictions.…”

“…In the same spirit, to assess the effect of outer shell electrons and the relative importance of initial-state and final-state electron-electron correlations to the K-shell DPI, an empirical SO-KO model based on an incoherent summation of the doubleto-single cross section ratios for the shake process and knock-out was proposed [1,2]. In our SO-KO model the double-to-single photoionization ratio as a function of the photon energy is given by:…”

“…11 On the other hand, core-to-core XES can be used as a probe of inner shell electron correlations, multi-electron scattering and electron rearrangement processes. 17 High energy resolution XES enables to probe the ligand environment of a metal of interest. 12,[18][19][20][21][22] Access to the ligand orbital is obtained by ionizing the core electron and measuring the following valence-to-core transition.…”
