The use of a hydraulic system (piston and cylinder) to block straw and molasses-based multi-nutrient animal feed helps to feed animals with little or no waste, preserving nutrients for a long period, and simplifying transport and storage conditions. Straws are regarded as one of the most essential elements in Ethiopia, particularly tef, wheat, and barley straw. As a result, the motorized animal feed block-making machine was designed and tested for throughput capacity, real capacity, efficiency, durability, and shelf life. The average actual capacity of the machine was 117, 128.5, and 133.3 kg/hr on different feed ingredients at the duration of time after mixing was 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 1 hour. The durability of the blocks ranged from 87 to 98 % and 94 to 99 % as duration of time after mixing the ingredients increases from 30 min to 1 hr on both urea and straw-based feed blocks respectively. The post-compression expansion decreases from 8 to 5 % and 10 to 6 % as duration of time increases from 30 min to 1 hr on urea and straw-based ingredients respectively.

Forage compact feed has the ability to cut the adaptation period of grazing cattle when transported, because they are used to consume forage. The effect of the form and type of forage formulation on the feeding behavior of cattle needs to be studied further to determine the preferences of cattle for this compact feed. This study used 36 cattle with 3 replications in each treatment. The 2 factor group factorial design consisting formulation and form of feed was applied in this study. The forms of feed used in this study were wafers, pellets, dried pellets, and cubes. The formulations used in this study were formulation 1 (10% molasses, 30% indigofera leaves, 50% straw, 10% elephant grass); formulation 2 (10% molasses, 30% indigofera leaves, 60% straw); formulation 3 (10% molasses, 20% indigofera leaves, 65% straw, 5% hemp). The parameters observed in this study were eating behavior of cattle which consisted of the frequency and duration of eating, drinking, rumination, and resting. The results were, there is an interaction on eating frequency and cattle duration. Formulation 3 on wafer treatment had the highest feeding frequency (P<0.05). Formulation 1 on wafer treatment had the highest duration of rumination (P<0.05). The conclusion is, Formulation 1 and 3 with wafer shape showed the best behavior for eating.

The main objectives of this research are to develop a formulation prototype for animal feed blocks from agricultural residues by compressing and thermal molding a mix of chopped residues, molasses and with or without gluten to a desired shape and weight. The prototype included three main units: power and power transmission unit; feed materials mixing unit and thermal compacting unit. Residues of rice straw, corn stalks and wheat straw were chopped into small pieces and experiments were conducted to test the formulation prototype on three mixing ratios of (2:1:1, 1:2:1 and 1:1:2) for the mentioned agricultural residues, respectively. Three ratios of additions molasses (10, 15and 20 %), with or without adding binder material (gluten) and with or without (thermal compact process) to measure the feed block shear force, total bacterial counts, moisture content and economic evaluation after one day, one month, two months and three months of feed blocks processing, respectively. The results indicated that minimum shear force (1.3 N) was obtained at feed mixing ratio of 1:1:2, additions molasses ratio of 20 %, without adding gluten, without thermal treatment after 3 months. The minimum total bacterial counts (12 CFU/g) was obtained at feed mixing ratio of 1:1:2, additions molasses ratio of 10 %, with adding gluten, with thermal treatment after 1 day. The minimum moisture content (17.8 %) was obtained at feed mixing ratio of 2:1:1, additions molasses ratio of 10 %, with adding gluten, with thermal treatment after 1 day. The total operation cost was about 1.14 LE/kg.
