Sexual propagation of Prunus mahaleb is difficult due to seed dormancy. To overcome dormancy and maximize germination, various pretreatments have been applied, including stratification (warm and cold), gibberellic acid (GA 3 ), sulfuric acid scarification (AS), and endocarp removal. The results show that warm stratification (WS) prior to cold stratification (CS) does not improve seed germination and a long period of WS (3 months) is disastrous for germination. CS alone (up to 4 months) has been found to hasten and increase seed germination. Pretreatment of the seeds with exogenous GA 3 , during the CS period, has been observed to result in significantly higher seed germination. AS of seeds for 45 minutes prior to GA 3 (1000 ppm for 24 hours) plus CS (up to 1 month) pretreatment has been considered to reduce the mechanical resistance of endocarp and improve germination. However, extended time of AS (180 minutes) prior to GA 3 plus CS pretreatment has been found to harm the seeds. The removal of endocarp has been noted to significantly improve germination. Seeds without endocarp, which were pretreated with GA 3 (1000 or 2000 ppm for 24 hours) and then cold stratified for 1 month, have been noted to exhibit the highest germination percentages.

Prunus cerasoides D. Don the Himalayan wild cherry is one lesser known multipurpose tree species of Himalaya. The tree prefers to grow on sloping grounds between the altitudes of 1200-2400 m, on all types of soils and rocks. The tree is used as a medicinal plant in Himalayan region. The fruit is edible and the pulp is used to make a cherry brandy. The species has poor germination and seedling establishment in natural habitat. The over exploitation of seeds of the species coupled with relatively hard seed coat has adversely affects the germination of seeds in their natural habitat. The information about the seed maturity and technique of germination enhancement is scanty. The present study was conducted to assess the exact maturity time and optimum temperature for enhancement of germination in seed of P. cerasoides. The fruit/seeds were collected from six sites covering the altitudinal range of 1350 – 1810 m during the period (2003-2004). The colour change of fruit from dark green to red was a useful indicator of seed maturity. Maximum germination coincided with 50.24 ± 0.19 % fruit and 30.11 ± 0.57 % seed moisture content. Negative correlation existed between germination and seed moisture content (r = 0.294; P< 0.01). Significantly higher germination occurred when seeds were placed above the paper at 25º C.

Potential of direct seeding in forest restoration of an abandoned pasture in the municipal area of Piracaia, São Paulo State, Brazil). The successful establishment of tree species in pastures may be related to the species used, germination conditions, and seed size. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments: pre-hydration and different kinds of seed coverage in eight native species with different seed sizes and verify if these species would be able to produce 1,666 individual ha -1 after one year. Five of the eight species tested had potential for large-scale use with the higher germination rate for the small seeds. The pre-hydration of the seeds was not efficient in increasing the germination and in the establishment of species, but coverage with straw and soil showed important results. The best result was obtained with the treatment of seed coverage with soil without hydration, with the establishment of 3,817 seedlings ha -1 after one year.RESUMO -(Potencial da semeadura direta na restauração florestal de pastagem abandonada no município de Piracaia, SP, Brasil). O sucesso do estabelecimento de espécies arbóreas em pastagens pode estar relacionado a espécie utilizada, condições de germinação e tamanho das sementes. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência dos tratamentos: pré-hidratação e diferentes coberturas em oito espécies nativas com diferentes tamanhos de sementes e verificar se estas seriam capazes de produzir após um ano 1.666 indivíduos ha -1 . Cinco espécies testadas apresentaram potencial para uso em grande escala, sendo que as sementes pequenas obtiveram a maior taxa de germinação. A pré-hidratação das sementes não se mostrou eficiente no aumento da germinação e estabelecimento das espécies, mas a cobertura por palha ou terra foi de grande importância. O melhor resultado obtido foi com o tratamento das sementes cobertas com terra e sem hidratação, com estabelecimento de 3.817 mudas ha -1 após um ano.
