Abstract: Background Little is known about the physical activity patterns of Somali adolescents. This study compared time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and participation in specific physical activities among Somali, other Non-Hispanic black and white adolescents. Methods A subsample of 1,268 adolescents (mean age= 14.6) who completed surveys as part of the EAT 2010 (Eating and Activity in Teens) study was included in analyses. “…A total of 19 articles discuss physical and developmental health [ 61 , 95 , 119 , 156 , 157 , 158 , 159 , 160 , 161 , 162 , 163 , 164 , 165 , 166 , 167 , 168 , 169 , 170 , 171 ] and shed light on AMC’s growth and development. For example, AMC in Israel, the United States, and France are more likely to fail tests assessing fine-motor skill, linguistic, and socio-emotional domains [ 156 ], and to have poor growth [ 61 ] and a low BMI [ 61 ].…”

“…AMC in the Netherlands are significantly more likely to watch television for two or more hours per day, compared to native Dutch children [ 164 ]. East African migrants report a desire to be physically active, but migrants to both the United States and Australia face challenges to physical inactivity, including social, environmental, and cultural barriers [ 165 , 166 ]. On the contrary, Somali child migrants to the United States are more likely to play soccer than other black peers; the girls have lower activity levels compared to black and white peers, but no differences are noted for boys [ 167 ].…”

“…Because immigrant status was almost fully confounded with ethnicity/race (only Hispanic, Asian and East African groups had a sizable proportion of youth born outside the United States), this construct was not included as a covariate in analytic models. Additional qualitative research may be particularly beneficial in understanding the role of acculturation and culture in the family/home environment for physical activity [53, 54]. …”

“…In New York City, for example, male and female Bangladeshis expressed that: 1) It was culturally inappropriate for women to engage in PA openly and in public spaces; 2) community venues deemed acceptable for PA were scarce; 3) mixed-sex participation was for non-Muslims (i.e., not for Muslims); and 4) women-only classes taught by women mitigated the problem [7]. In Minnesota, lower engagement by Somali adolescent girls in certain types of PA, compared to their male co-religionists and female non-Muslims, was partially attributed to cultural beliefs that discouraged coparticipation in sport with or being watched by males and clothing restrictions for preserving modesty [8].…”
