Physical Activity Levels of Hong Kong Chinese Children: Relationship with Body Fat

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between habitual physical activity and body fatness in Hong Kong Chinese children. Fifty children aged 8–11 yrs wore a uniaxial accelerometer for 7 days to determine physical activity levels. The sum of seven skinfolds was used to estimate body fatness. Activity counts summed over 1 day (299384 – 140427, mean – SD) were similar to activity counts recorded in previous studies. Activity correlated significantly negatively with sum of skinfolds in boys (r … Show more

“…Objective measurement instruments such as pedometers and accelerometers, which are unobtrusive and do not rely on participant recall and cognitive ability, are particularly appropriate for the youth. Three local studies used objective measures, including accelerometers, 21 heart rate monitors, 26 and direct observation, 20 to determine the PA levels. However, these studies only focused on a small group of participants (sample size ranged from 36 to 50), and thus, were not representative of the general youth population in Hong Kong.…”

“…Rowlands et al 21 used a single-axis accelerometer to assess the PA level of 50 children aged 8 to 11 years. Data showed that the mean daily overall activity counts were 299 384, and no difference between genders 21. Research from western countries using the same measuring instruments reported a similar PA level (280 350 counts per day) of children aged about 9 years 31.…”

Eight studies used objective measures to obtain PA data of school-age children and adolescents with six studies using an accelerometer 10,26,32,35,43,56.
