Physical activity is associated with nutritional biomarkers in hemodialysis patients: A cross‐sectional study

Abstract: Objective: To explore the association between physical activity levels and nutritional biomarkers in hemodialysis patients. Methods: Eighty-six patients responded to the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire to estimate the metabolic equivalent of tasks (MET) per week. A MET-min per week <600 was considered as sedentary. The nutritional biomarkers (i.e., albumin, globulin, and albumin/globulin ratio) were collected. Results: Sixty-five patients (75.6%) were sedentary. Binary logistic… Show more

“…Patients with kidney failure usually have a highly sedentary behaviour (Almeida et al, 2021; Nawab et al, 2021; Wilkinson et al, 2021), leading to impairments in musculoskeletal health and an increased prevalence of sarcopenia and frailty (Panaye et al, 2015; Zelle et al, 2017). Intradialytic exercise programmes (e.g., resistance/strength training) have been proposed as therapeutic interventions to mitigate these outcomes (Matsuzawa & Roshanravan, 2018; Noor et al, 2021; Wilkinson & Ribeiro, 2022).…”
