Physical activity and long-term mortality risk in older adults: A prospective population based study (NEDICES)

Abstract: To analyze whether Physical activity (PA) reduces mortality risk at thirteen years' follow-up in a population-based cohort of Spanish older adults. The NEDICES (Neurological Disorders in Central Spain) is a prospective population-based survey of older adults (age ≥ 65 years) that comprised 5278 participants at baseline. A modified version of the Rosow-Breslau questionnaire was applied to categorize the PA (sedentary, light, moderate and high) and dates of death were collected from the Official Spanish Death Re… Show more

“…Greater levels of PA have repeatedly demonstrated an association with better health and quality of life [ 2 , 3 ], whilst, conversely, low PA is associated with negative health outcomes, including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus [ 4 ], and mortality [ 5 ]. A wide range of deleterious associations have also been observed with physical inactivity, or sedentary behaviour [ 6 , 7 , 8 ], which has been described as the major public health problem of our time [ 9 ]. Musculoskeletal health appears to be particularly compromised by both sedentary behaviour and/or low levels of PA [ 10 , 11 ].…”

“…Nowadays the evidences are increasing to support that lower levels of physical activity presents an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality [34][35]. Physical inactivity and food inadequacy has been considered as the major causes of overweight and obesity status in the worldwide population.…”

“…Therefore, interventions that can prevent or retard the decline of immunocompetence would have a considerable clinical and public health impact on this parcel of the population. In this scenario, the regular practice of physical activity and physical exercise has been widely prescribed, including for elderly people, since it favors anti-inflammatory status, promoting healthier aging and reducing all-cause mortality ( 9 ).…”
