Physical Activity after Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background and Purpose. Physical activity is beneficial after stroke, but it is unclear how active stroke survivors are. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to determine levels of activity and factors predicting activity. Summary of Review: Methods. MEDLINE (1946 to present) and EMBASE (1980 to present) were systematically searched until July 2012. “…Balance disorders, sensation loss, pain, and psychological and cognitive failures could be also reasons for a low PA level after stroke (3). Interestingly, the PA level is also low among high-functioning stroke patients (4). As PA was observed to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke and stroke severity, there are some scientific recommendations indicating the PA as a method for the secondary prevention of stroke (4,5).…”

“…Interestingly, the PA level is also low among high-functioning stroke patients (4). As PA was observed to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke and stroke severity, there are some scientific recommendations indicating the PA as a method for the secondary prevention of stroke (4,5). It is known that regular PA can decrease the adverse effects of sedentary lifestyles such as cardiovascular diseases, falls, and depression after stroke (6,7).…”

Steps and Activity Counts Mean number of steps per day ranged from 1,389 ( = 79) to 7,379.…”
