Aim Most species of temperate regions are believed to have shifted to lower latitudes or elevations during the glacial periods of the Quaternary. In this study we test whether this phylogeographic assumption is also true for the plateau zokor (Eospalax baileyi), a fossorial rodent endemic to the climate‐sensitive Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP), which ranges in elevation from 2600 to 4600 m. Location The QTP of western China. Methods Phylogeographic analyses were conducted based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences of 193 individuals from 20 populations over the entire range of the species. Results A total of 54 haplotypes identified in the present study clustered into four geographically correlated clades located in the interior of the QTP (clade A) and at the plateau edge (B, C and D). Molecular calibrations suggest that the interior plateau (A) and plateau‐edge (B–D) clades diverged at 1.2 Ma and that the three plateau‐edge clades diverged between 0.85 and 0.80 Ma. These estimates are concordant with diastrophism and glaciation events in the QTP. Coalescent tests rejected both the hypothesis that all current populations originated from a single refugium at a low elevation during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the hypothesis that the two lineages diverged during the LGM. The tests instead supported the hypothesis that there were four refugia during the LGM, and that the four clades diverged prior to the late Pleistocene. Main conclusions Our results suggest that Quaternary diastrophisms and glaciations repeatedly promoted allopatric divergence of the plateau zokor into geographical clades, and that these regional clades subsequently persisted at high elevations, rather than migrating to the low‐elevation plateau edge during subsequent glacial ages.

In order to devise adequate conservation and management strategies for endangered species, it is important to incorporate a reliable understanding of its spatial population structure, detecting the existence of demographic partitions throughout its geographical range and characterizing the distribution of its genetic diversity. Moreover, in species that occupy fragmented habitats it is essential to know how landscape characteristics may affect the genetic connectivity among populations. In this study we use eight microsatellite markers to analyze population structure and gene flow patterns in the complete geographic range of the endangered rodent Ctenomys porteousi. Also, we use landscape genetics approaches to evaluate the effects of landscape configuration on the genetic connectivity among populations. In spite of geographical proximity of the sampling sites (8-27 km between the nearest sites) and the absence of marked barriers to individual movement, strong population structure and low values of gene flow were observed. Genetic differentiation among sampling sites was consistent with a simple model of isolation by distance, where peripheral areas showed higher population differentiation than those sites located in the central area of the species' distribution. Landscape genetics analysis suggested that habitat fragmentation at regional level has affected the distribution of genetic variation among populations. The distance of sampling sites to areas of the landscape having higher habitat connectivity was the environmental factor most strongly related to population genetic structure. In general, our results indicate strong genetic structure in C. porteousi, even at a small spatial scale, and suggest that habitat fragmentation could increase the population differentiation.

Geographical distribution and ecological diversification of South American octodontid rodents

Caviomorph rodents represent one of the most distinctive groups of mammals in southern South America drylands; they colonized South America from Africa via trans‐oceanic dispersions in the Eocene (40–50 Ma) and underwent an extraordinary ecological radiation after their arrival, thus making this group of great interest for biogeographic and evolutionary studies. The aim of this article was to provide a working hypothesis regarding the biogeographical history and ecological diversification of one of its conspicuous families, the Octodontidae. We reconstruct the evolutionary theater where their ecological diversification took place, and potential events of dispersal, vicariance and extinctions. We analyzed the historical biogeography of the Octodontidae across the eight ecoregions where they occur, based on species phylogeny and divergence times. Four approaches were used to reconstruct ancestral area: (1) Statistical Dispersal–Vicariance Snalysis (S‐DIVA); (2) Bayesian binary Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis implemented in Reconstruct Ancestral State in Phylogenies (RASP); (3) Fitch optimization method; and (d) weighted ancestral area analysis (WAAA). Parsimony ancestral state reconstructions were implemented in order to explore the evolutionary history of an ecological character, mode of life. We propose the northern portion of the Monte desert ecoregion as the ancestral area in the evolution of the Octodontidae, with subsequent dispersal and enlargement of the family geographic range. The evolution of their ecological specialization (i.e. modes of life) suggests an ambiguous ancestral condition (saxicolous, generalist terrestrial, semifossorial) linked to species adaptation to arid environments, with fossoriality appearing later in octodontid evolution. The evolution of the Octodontidae is associated with contrasting environmental conditions (i.e. climate and vegetation) produced by the Andean Uplift between eastern and western sides.
