Phylogenetic significance of leaf micromorphology and anatomy in the tribe Mentheae (Nepetoideae: Lamiaceae)

Abstract: A comparative micromorphological study of leaves was carried out on 102 species of Mentheae; 61 species were selected for the anatomical study. Mentheae possessed both amphistomatic and hypostomatic leaves. The diversity of leaf epidermal characteristics was based on the variation in morphology of epidermal cells, stomata types and trichome types. Although each characteristic on its own has rather limited systematic value, the combination of some of these features may be systematically relevant, especially for… Show more

“…Additionally, SEM are a valuable research instrument that increasing our fundamental knowledge about previously unrecorded structural components of plants with high magnifications and resolution (Newton, ; Stant, ). Some previous studies (Ashfaq et al, ; Bahadur et al, ; Mannethody & Purayidathkandy, ; Moon, Hong, Smets, & Huysmans, ; Mousavi, Jafari, & Najafi, ; Salmaki et al, ; Ullah et al, ) also showed the importance of SEM in the identification, discrimination and phylogenetic relationship of other groups of plants.…”

“…According to our results, the presence or absence, as well as the density, of capitate trichomes are diagnostic characters of individual species. Moon et al (2009) did a comprehensive study on leaves of the tribe Mentheae, and presented tichome features of two species in Ziziphora : Z. capitata and Z. clinopodioides . According to the results of Moon et al (2009), capitate glandular trichomes were not found in Z. clinopodioides.…”
