Phylogenetic relationships between Dicrocoelium chinensis populations in Japan and China based on mitochondrial nad1 gene sequences

Abstract: We carried out phylogenetic analyses of the relationships between Dicrocoelium chinensis populations in Japan and China using molecular markers. One hundred nine lancet flukes collected from Japan and China were identified as D. chinensis based on their testis orientation and the nucleotide sequences of their ribosomal ITS2. These flukes were analyzed phylogenetically using mitochondrial nad1 gene sequences. An analysis of molecular variance found that the percentage of variation between the countries was extr… Show more

“…Dicrocoeliid liver flukes have previously been reported in Himalayan India, [24], China [25,26] and Iran [27,28]; but there are only anecdotal and unconfirmed reports from Pakistan [29]. The molecular methods used in the present study confirm for the first time the species identity of D. dendriticum lancet flukes collected from abattoirs in the Chitral valley.…”

“…dendriticum in sheep and goats in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan provinces. Dicrocoeliid liver flukes have previously been reported in India [ 43 ], China [ 44 , 45 ], Iran [ 13 ], Canada [ 5 ], France [ 16 ], Germany [ 46 ] and Italy [ 47 ]. In a small-scale study, dicrocoeliosis was recently reported in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan provinces [ 6 ].…”

“…D. dendriticum (the lancet fluke) is a small liver fluke infecting domestic animals in the Northern coasts of Africa, Asia and the Americas (Mas-Coma and Bargues, 1997 ; Traversa et al ., 2013 ; Manga-González and Ferreras, 2014 ). Using mitochondrial nd 1 and cox 1 sequences, D. dendriticum could be distinguished from D. chinensis and D. hospes (Hayashi et al ., 2017 ; Khan et al ., 2021 ). In human dicrocoeliasis, there may be true (genuine) and false (spurious) infections.…”
