Phylogenetic Origins of the Himalayan Endemic Dolomiaea , Diplazoptilon and Xanthopappus (Asteraceae: Cardueae) Based on Three DNA Regions

Abstract: The findings provide an improved understanding of the intergeneric relationships in Cardueae. The crude calibration of lineages indicates that the uplifts of the Qiinghai-Tibetan Plateau since the Miocene might have served as a continuous stimulus for the production of these morphologically aberrant endemic elements of the Himalayan flora.

“…The nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) has been shown to be a useful source of information for resolving interspecific relationships in the Asteraceae (Baldwin 1992, Sang et al 1994, Sang et al 1995, Kim et al 1996, Kim et al 2005, Clevinger & Panero 2000, Francisco-Ortega et al 2001, Liu et al 2002, Zhang et al 2011. In addition, the plastid trnL-F, atpB-rbcL and rps16 regions have been used to reconstruct the phylogeny of some taxa of the family Asteraceae (Kim et al 2005, Wang et al 2007, Nakamura 2012.…”

“…Two sections, corresponding to two previously described genera, Dolomiaea and Vladimiria, defined by Ling (1965), have been established within the genus based on the differences in style structure (long and acute versus short and round) (Shi 1987). In recent years, molecular phylogenetic analyses of this and related genera have suggested that Dolomiaea is a sister to the clade comprising Himalaiella, Jurinea and Lipschitziella (Wang et al 2007). In addition, phylogenetic analyses have suggested that two species, Frolovia frolovii and Saussurea costus, should be transferred to Dolomiaea (Wang et al 2007).…”
