Shangwua (Compositae), a new genus from the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau and Himalayas

Abstract: A new genus of Compositae, Shangwua, is described to accomodate all species formerly placed in Saussurea sect. Jacea. This genus is distinct from the other genera of tribe Cardueae in its unique combination of states of characters including involucral bracts, receptacle, paleae, anther, style, achene and pappus. Phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data suggest that this new genus belongs to the Xeranthemum group, a lineage of the Carduinae that diversified early, with only distant relationships to Saussur… Show more

“…Five of seven groups are represented in China (Table ). Within Carduinae, the close relationship of Shangwua and Xeranthemum was supported by our analysis and recent studies (Wang et al, ; Wang et al, ). The close relationships of Cousinia + ( Arctium + Schmalhausenia ) and Aucklandia + Frolovia , previously inferred by López‐Vinyallonga et al () and Wang et al (), separately, were also supported in our phylogenetic inferences (PP > 0.95; Fig.…”

“…The following rearrangements on the classification of Chinese Asteraceae were suggested: transferring the genera Leucomeris and Nouelia from the tribe Mutisieae to the tribe Hyalideae (Wunderlichioideae); Ainsliaea , Myripnois , and Pertya from the tribe Mutisieae to the tribe Pertyeae (Pertyoideae); Echinops from the tribe Echinopeae and Atractylodes , Carlina , and Tugarinovia from the tribe Carlineae to the tribe Cardueae (Carduoideae); Cavea from the genera incertae sedis to the tribe Gymnarrhenoideae (Gymnarrhenoideae), Centipeda from the genera incertae sedis to the tribe Athroismeae (Asteroideae); and Doronicum from the tribe Senecioneae to the tribe Doroniceae (Asteroideae). Other systematic studies related to Chinese Asteraceae (e.g., Liu, ; Anderberg et al, ; Gao & Liu, ; Funk et al ; Blöch et al, ; Fan et al ; Liu & Yang, ; Zhang et al, ; Wang et al, , 2013b; Li et al, ; Yuan et al, ) and The Phylogeny of Angiosperms (http://angio.bergianska.se/) were also considered here. Finally, we herein proposed an updated classification of Chinese Asteraceae at the generic level to reflect the recent phylogenetic and taxonomic changes (see Table , containing their placements in subfamilies, tribes, subtribes, and groups).…”

“…However, there is an alternate hypothesis: the change may have been in the opposite direction, from perennial to annual. In the Xeranthemum group, Amphoricarpos and Shangwua species grow in the Caucasus and East-Mediterranean mountains (Susanna & Garcia-Jacas, 2009) and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Himalayas (Wang et al, 2013), respectively, while the taxa from the other annual genera, Xeranthemum, Chardinia and Siebera, grow in open steppes in the Near and Middle East. Previous works have suggested that the ancestors of Xeranthemum and related genera are Shangwua and Amphoricarpos, both of them are perennials from conservative habitats (mountains).…”

“…The genus Xeranthemum L. is a member of the Xeranthemum group within subtribe Carduinae of the tribe Cardueae, together with Amphoricarpos Vis., Chardinia Desf., Siebera J. Gay (Susanna & Garcia-Jacas, 2009) and the newly described genus Shangwua Yu J. Wang, Raab-Straube, Susanna & J. Quan Liu (Wang et al, 2013). The genera of the group possess very characteristic pappus of the cypselae and the papery silver-white bracts of the capitulum.…”

“…were difficult to reconstruct, mainly as a consequence of incomplete taxon sampling. Several studies (Raab‐Straube, ; Kita & al., ; Wang & al., ) have shown that Saussurea in its traditional circumscription (Lipschitz, ) was polyphyletic. For example, the species of Himalaiella and Lipschitziella were originally described within Saussurea , but have later been established as separate genera (Raab‐Straube, ).…”
